Northern California Babies

Is thumb sucking pretty common?

Neither of my brothers or I were thumb suckers, so I don't have a lot of experience with it.  But, I noticed there are several NorCal Babies that are.  Is it pretty common?  Just curious...

Re: Is thumb sucking pretty common?

  • Neither DH or I were, but Sabrina does...mainly when she's trying to sleep but pretty much anytime she gets too upset.

However, DH did have a pacifier until he was 4. Indifferent

My brother sucked his thumb, but his son does not.

  • Faith isn't a thumb sucker, but my sis and I both were.?
  • I dunno.  I have 2 kids.  One never really sucked his thumb, and loved his paci.  The other never took a paci and is a big time thumb sucker.
  • Both DH and I were thumbsuckers (my sis wasn't.)  My mom said I started at 2 months.  Charlotte will sometimes do it, but not regularly.
  • My brother and I were both thumbsuckers.  I thought N would, but she prefers the paci.

  • i sucked my thumb and baby B does too! K didnt though.
  • I was not a thumb sucker. DS came out of the womb with a blister on his hand from sucking it in utero but he does not such his thumb now.  He was a fan of the paci but has decided that he doesn't like it/need it except rarely when falling asleep.
  • I think it's pretty common.

DD tries to suck her thumb (and did so in the womb), but we're trying to encourage the pacifier over the thumb since I was a long-term thumb sucker. :-/

  • I wasn't a thumb sucker---nor my sis nor brother.

But DH and his sis were---and the both had a large separation in their front teeth too....not sure if its related..but I seem to think so.

  • Tyler never sucked his thumb and weaned himself from the paci around 10 months. ?Cami never took a paci and still sucks her thumb for comfort, mainly only if she has her bunny-lovey.
  • DH and I were both thumb suckers which is why I am so against Riley being one. My thought is you can take away a paci but you can't take away a thumb.
  • I don't know either...we pushed the paci until Sean just wouldn't take it anymore after 6 months. Aiden found his thumb around 5 months and had been sucking it more and more before he broke his arm. Ever since then, no more thumb sucking--which is a good thing and bad thing. The bad is he's kinda forgotten how to soothe himself. I wasn't a thumbsucker and I think DH was for a short while.
