Baby Names

Thoughts on these "old-fashioned" girly names?

There are so many girl names that we like and we need help narrowing it down.  Thanks!

1.  Lydia

2.  Amelia

3.  Dahlia

4.  Scarlett

5.  Sophie

6.  Stella

We love the name Amelie but are afraid that it will constantly be mispronounced.  Maybe for a middle name?

  • 1. Amelia

    2. Lydia

    3. Sophie

The others are nms, but they're all pretty names.

  • 1.  Lydia - don't like it

    2.  Amelia - very cute

    3.  Dahlia - too much

    4.  Scarlett - it's ok - a little O'Hara for my tastes

    5.  Sophie - way too common

    6.  Stella - don't like it

  • I love Lydia and Amelia.

If you are someone who cares about popularity, Amelia is getting really popular--at least in this area (Boston). I know 2 or 3 under one year old girls with this name but then again, Sophie/Sophia is in the top 10, I think.

I think Lydia is very classic w/o being overdone and Lydie is a cute nn.

  • Amelia is our top choice for a girl.

This is my fear, too.  Also, the other day I saw an add in a magazine about a new sitcom that is coming out called 'Sophie'.  Not sure how I feel about that. :(

  • My faves are Amelia, Dahlia, Sophie.

  • For me the only ones that fit a young girl and would "age" well are Sophie and Scarlett.  The others are just too "old" for me and I can't picture a baby or little girl with those names.

  • I love Lydia and Dahlia, and haven't heard them for a little girl, so while they are familiar, they are special.

Scarlett is so pretty, but Scarlett Johansson has made it kind of trendy. Sophie is very popular right now. Stella is sweet, but in the vein of the popular Ellas, Bellas, Isabellas, etc.

Hmmm...Did not know that about Amelia.  I haven't heard it as much around here (FL), but I can tell it's on the rise. Stella is definitely up and coming too (probably b/c of the Bella/Ella craze that is huge around here).

Yes, popularity is definitely an issue for us, even though I wish wasn't.

  • I'm a big fan of Stella and Amelia, but I really want someone to go for Scarlett and Dahlia - awesome names! So stylish.
  • I LOVE Lydia!! Sohie is soo cute! We are thinking (if the baby's a girl) of Amelia as a middle name. My DH great grandmothers first name is Amelia!

  • I've heard alot of people say on this and other boards that they can't get passed A Streetcar Named Desire on the name Stella.  My baby girl is Stella and trust me, after you see the baby, you no longer think about it. She becomes her own person just like any other baby with a name made popular by a movie/song/tv show.  My niece's name is Scarlett and I never think of Scarlett O'Hara.  I must admit, hearing Lydia I think of Beetlejuice, but I know if I ever met a Lydia I would only see how adorable she is and never make that reference again.  So, I get it but once you actually give the name to a human being, all the other references become null and void.

ok, I'm done now.  Sorry :)

  • My favorite old-fashioned name is Ingrid. Classic, feminine, and so pretty without being too flowery or cutesy for a grown woman, while at the same time not too overwhelming for a little baby.
  • I love Sophie and Stella!! Not a big fan of Lydia, but the rest I like too, but Sophie and Stella are my top 2 from your list! Smile
