Hard or soft back books for baby?

I really want to emphasize reading with my kids.  I plan to start purchasing books but I'm wondering if I should buy hard or soft back books.  I guess logically the hard back books would stand up to more ware and ultimately last longer.  Would there be any reason to buy soft back books??  ....easier for kids to read??

  • The little guy I take care of loves being read to, but he also loves chewing on his soft books.. he looks at the pictures and chews the book.. carries it in his mouth as well. Soo, I say hard cover books when you are reading to them and soft ones so they can play around with them and look at pics and stuff... idk if I'm the only one, but that's how it goes around here.

  • The plastic books (the bath books) are the only ones that have survived my toddler's teething phase.  I don't think it matters for the youngest ages, but I would lean towards the hard books for later when they start to tear out the pages, again realizing that even those might need to be replaced if you have a chewer like I do.
  • My DS loves his board books.  He will sit and "read" for 20 minutes or more on his own.  By "soft back" do you mean paper books?  I definitely wouldn't get those, get board books.  DS also loves the plastic bath books, but we only use them in the tub.

  • I bought both.  I also bought cloth and board books for baby to actually play with and the other books will be for when I read to him.
  • Hard and plastic have been the best for DS. He could shred a paper book easily.
