1st Trimester

Weight Gain: Pity Party Vent

I know I'm pregnant and that I am going to gain weight. I am completely okay with that. What I'm not okay with is the fact that I've gained three pounds since finding out a little over a month ago. I know it's because I've been hungry and I've not been good about making sure I am eating healthy snacks all the time. I also threw in a week of stress eating when we weren't sure what was going on with the babe a week and a half ago. I just don't want to gain an unhealthy amount of weight as I am already about 15 lbs above where I'd like to be ideally.

Well, we did buy a new grill this weekend and it's getting nice out, so I guess I will just have to get my @ss in gear and start walking at night and being more careful what I grab to fend off this hunger! Okay, thanks for coming to my pity party Party!!!, please grab your party bag on the way out.

Girl don't worry... I have had the exact same problems.  I suffered through eating disorders all through college and have always been obsessed with weight.  My husband keeps reminding me that it's okay to gain weight when you're pregnant, and that I shouldn't worry about dieting.

I know he is right, and I'm trying my very hardest not to count calories or watch the scale obsessively, but it's tough!

  • lol that's too funny! but i feel your pain...and yes you are going to gain weight...at least you know what you need to do! since this is my second pregnancy i should know better...i do find that i am making a more conscious effort to eat healthy snacks like fruits and yogurt and stuff like that in between...but i never thought i would be hugnry every 2 hours! sheesh
  • I lost 36 lbs for my wedding last year, and the crash dieter in me wants to control my pregnancy weight gain as much as possible so I don't have to go through that again.   However, the responsible mom-to-be in me knows that following Doc's instructions and gaining that 30 lbs or so is the best thing for my baby.   Hang in there - nobody wants to see their body change, but it's all going to be worth it!   As long as we're responsible and not using pregnancy as an excuse to eat cake all day (my previously svelte sister who had never struggled with weight in her life gained 70lbs because she thought it was funny) we're gonna be just fine!

  • I too am about 15-20lbs over what I should be. I have been trying to get out walking in the evenings but its ben too damn cold and Ive been way too tired.

Im actually excited about having a pregnant belly.  I reguarly feel like I was sucking in before I got pregnant so that will make me feel so much better to just let it all hang out.  Its the 9 months and wabbeling around Im not looking forward to , im only 5 '2'' on a good day so I really have to watch my weight.

Wow, I could go on forever too.  Thanks for letter me join in on your vent!

  • Try not to stress too much. I totally understand where you are coming from. I worked to lose 35 pounds and I still had a good 15, or more, to go.  I am having a hard time eating all the healthy snacks I used to when they all make me gag. : )  In everything that I've read so far, we must give ourselves what we want for right now especially if it's helping us to feel better and less nauseous.  The second trimester is more about eating healthy, balanced snacks.  I've been super worried about what I'm eating (I've been eating a lot of carbs to help curb nauseousness.)  But I have to let it go, and try to get healthy snacks in when I feel like I can eat it.

I was following your story on here a couple weeks ago, and I apologize I did not keep up.  I assume everything is OK with you and the baby?

Yes! We went back a week later for our follow-up u/s and there was a tiny lil shrimp and a blinking heartbeat! My due date was pushed back ten days and I have to do Week 6 over, but am happy to do it if it means we are still having a baby!

Thanks to everyone else...I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling torn about worrying about my weight and what's good for the baby.

OMG, that's so funny because not sucking in my stomach is one of the things I am most looking forward to about all these changes in my body! LOL
  • Try not to stress too much - I gained 9 pounds in my first trimester and now this week, I've lost three... I think a lot it was bloat and water retention... I just make sure I only eat when I'm hungry (which is often) and TRY to eat healthly... but i still have two chocolate chip cookies before bed :)
  • I totally understand. I was exactly in your boat, weighing more than I wanted to when I got pregnant. I know I have no chance of being a cute skinny pregnant woman with a nice round bump, but still  Smile  I do hope I can be better about exercising, I've just been feeling so crappy lately it's hard to push through.

  • Don't worry about it. This early on it could be water weight not actual pounds. Plus you'll have weeks on end where you'll gain nothing at all or all of a sudden you'll slam on 7 pounds all at once. I gained 35 pounds with my ds and by the time I'd left the hospital I was down 15! Within the next week or two I'd dropped another 5 in water weight. You have no idea how much fluid you are carrying around inside yourself while you're pregnant. So all in all I had 15 pounds of weight to worry about which isn't bad at all. I'd lost that in 6 months without doing anything special or worrying about my diet at all. I did bf which helps a lot because you'll burn extra calories but it's still a different kind of weight gain then the kind that results from binging at Christmas time!

That is such a relief!  I am very glad for you. :)

  • I bet if you took a dump right now you'd drop those horrible 3 lbs!
  • Seriously, 3 lbs? You are going to have a long time ahead of you...get used to the weight gain.

Yeah. Seriously. 3 lbs. A lot earlier than I should be gaining it - that's the point of the post. I'm sure it's a completley different perspective for ladies who are about to pop and have had 40 weeks of weight gain.

So If you know that it is 40 weeks of weight gain, why are you flipping out that you are gaining weight now??? It's pregnancy -- it's not like you are going to double in size....

  • You should also take into consideration that you gain weight because of increased blood, bloat, your boobs getting bigger.. The list goes on and on. I'm at 23 weeks and have gained 7 pounds total.  All of that was gained in the first trimester.. It is scary to see the scale creep up.. but there is a good reason behind it.  A baby is growing inside of you and is depending on you for nourishment.  Hang in there..
  • I would tend to think it's bloat and water weight, so I wouldn't worry too much. ?It seemed like I gained 3 pounds as well during the first 2 weeks we knew I was pregnant, and I started to freak out because everything I read said you should only gain 3-5 pounds the first trimester. ?When I talked to my doctor, she said it was just water weight and not to worry. ?All in all I've only gained 3.5 pounds total, so try not to worry! ?Some women just put on the weight at the front end of the first trimester.
  • I am suffering from major MS so I am having to constantly eat something. I feel huge, especially with this bloated belly. My jeans are tight and uncomfortable, blah. I went for a walk over the weekend in attempts to make myself feel better and I ended up crying thinking about how fat I already am in my 8th week. I came home and weighed and I have not gained a pound! I'm the same weight as before my BFP. I feel a little better about my changing body now that I know it's all baby and bloat (thus far). I want to do the healthy thing for my baby but I'm very athletic and naturally thin, so it's hard to watch my body change.

Thanks - that was my point, that you aren't supposed to gain more than 3-5 lbs during the 1st Tri and I am already at 3 lbs because I haven't been eating as healthy as I should. Glad some people have good reading comprehension skills Wink.
  • I don't think I've gained a pound, but I'm so bloated that I can hardly button most of my pants. I haven't broken down and worn the strechy pants I bought. I swear...I wake up and look normal, and by 5 pm, I look pregnant.  I had already gained about 8-10 lbs before we got pregnant, because I quit smoking (yeah!!!). Now, I feel like a cow.

Thanks for letting me join the party.

  • 3 lbs? Even non-pregnant people fluctuate that much in one DAY. I can't imagine spending my pregnancy worrying about the scale. Just do your best to eat healthy for your baby, get exercise when you can, and lose whatever weight you gain when it's all over.
  • It's 3 lbs....seriously calm down.

Just wait until later on when you gain like 9 lbs in 2 weeks.  You're pregnant.

  • I'm only a few weeks ahead of you and I've gained 10 pounds. I'd be thrilled with 3.
  • I know it is hard to see, especially at the beginning. But soon you will look back on this time and think, damn I looked good then!!
  • I feel your pain. In the beginning alot of it is stress, so many foods not sounding good and for me what does isnt very healthy. If it makes you feel better I am getting married in 6 weeks. I will be 18 weeks pregnant. I have gained about 6 but dont want to gain a pound more!

Best recommendation, eat healthy stuff and exercise. I discovered I am so exhausted before exercising, I dont feel any worse afterwards. Sometimes I feel better! Then at least you know you are gaining 'healthy' baby weight not fat!

  • Please please keep in mind, like the above posters have said, you are gaining weight in other ways than fat. Its extra blood flow, boobs, etc. Just eat as healthy as you can and exercise but be mindful of that growing baby inside you. Try not to step on that scale a whole lot, you will make yourself crazy. Don't compare yourself to others either- everyone carries differently. And don't listen to dumb*ss strangers comments about "how big you are" or "they gained this many lbs" etc.  Some weeks you will gain more, others you'll slow down. Some people gain in the beginning, some at the end.

Do whats the healthiest for both of you and don't worry about the scale. Trust me, it will be a long road if you're getting on that scale everyday :)
