How can I get DD to drink out of a straw?

She doesn't get it, and the more I try the more resistant she is becoming (even if I wait a few days to reintroduce).  Is there something that worked for your DC ?  TIA!

Re: How can I get DD to drink out of a straw?

  • Capri Sun or a juice box!

We got a Capri Sun w/ a kiddie meal at a local restaurant and I squeezed it until it got in DS' mouth then he sucked. He's been drinking from a straw ever since!

  • Loading the player...
  • DS figured it out when I had a strawberry banana Jamba juice and has been ever since :)
  • I was wondering the same thing... I just try it when we're out to eat. I try to show her how to suck, but she ends up blowing outward and blowing bubbles in the glass :)
  • Put milk shake in it and suck it to the top... that is how Harmon learned a few months ago (thanks to dad).

100% exactly what I was going to write.  DD took to the straw immediately after trying a juice box, and she was resistant and even tantruming when I tried with a sippy straw cup before that....so frustrated.  No problems now!

  • In addition to the juice box trick (where you squeeze the juice up into the straw) you can also try to put your finger over the end of a straw trapping the liquid ?in then put the other end in her mouth but don't let go all at once. Let her realize that there is something in it and she may just?instinctively?do it. If not, then let a little of it go into her mouth. ?

I don't really know how but we just kept trying and one day she finally did it. We were both in total shock! ?

But I still take a sippy cup with us when we go out because she doesn't understand not to tip the straw cups and it ends up all over the place. ?Easier to just put it in a sippy and be done with it.?

  • Another vote for the juice box, it's the ONLY way DS figured it out.  We had tried everything else, and the juice box worked on the first try.  We just put the straw in his mouth and squeezed the box until the juice came up into his mouth and he immediately started sucking on it!  I don't know why other methods didn't work, since they're the same principle, but they didn't.

  • Its not something that you can force and kids pick it up at different times.  I offer my DD a straw sippy every so often or when she shows an interest in her big sisters.  Sometimes she just chews it but yesterday was the first time she actually tired to suck anything.  I am hoping she figures it out soon as it makes life much easier when we are out to eat.  I will be offering her a straw more often now that she is more interested.
