Babies: 0 - 3 Months

which clothing brands "run big" & which "run small"?

I am worried that my child is going to be giant and not fit in any small clothes that people buy me.

( when my little bro was born he was 11lbs and 23 inches..my mom took him home in a 6 month size outfit...I am hopping that was a fluke)

which brands are small?  Should I even buy/keep any newborn?

  • I think 'Kyle & Deena' (? spelling) run small

which has been great for by 6lb DD!

  • This is always a hard one cause it's such a hit or miss. Any boutique brands run small, such as Baby Nay, Toni Tierney, Baby LuLu ; and I think Gap is pretty across the board - depending on outfit. Kinda crazy, but usually gap does fit her well in 3-6 months right now.   All in all, I think across the board you need to pull things out cause you will find that the time you do, your lo will maybe wear it once if you don't pull it out at least 6 months ahead. So, for example in her closet right now, I have 3-6 months, 6-9. She wears some 6-9 currently. Crazy.
  • I'm a big fan of Carters and I think they run pretty close to how the sizes should be.

  • Babies in my family run big as well (my dad and his brothers were all around 10 lbs and my grandma is only 5'4"). I was afraid my baby would be huge and didn't buy any newborn clothing. When I was 37 weeks, my doctor said I was having a peanut. She guessed around 6.5 lbs. We went out and purchased newborn clothing, but left the tags on it and the?receipts?with it just in case. We only washed up one set of white onesies before he was born.?

DS was born at 40 weeks and 1 day, weighing 7lbs 3oz. He was/is a skinny baby, and wore newborn clothing until he was 6 weeks old. He fits really well into Carter's clothes, which run longer and more narrow. Other brands, like OshKosh, Gap, Koala Kids, and whatever JCPenny's brand is, are way too wide on him.?

My friend's baby was much larger then DS. She was the same length as him (20") but weighed 9lbs 5oz. She never wore newborn, so my friend returned those clothes and exchanged them for larger sizes. She wears the other brands, but doesn't fit into Carters clothes at all.?

So if you do buy/receive any newborn clothes, just keep the tags on them. After baby is born, you can always exchange them for larger sizes. But it is good to keep them just in case.?

Agreed...gerber and some circo (target brand) run small.  I haven't had any problems with Carter, First Years (I think that's the name) or Gap.

  • DS was 8lbs, 9oz and 21 inches when he was born.  He never wore NB clothes or diapers.  He's 4 months old now, 16 1/2 lbs, and 25.5" and is wearing:

3-6 in BabyStyle and Janie & Jack,
    6-12 in Gap & Gymboree,
9 months in Carters (some outfits are 12 months), and
    12-18 in Old Navy.

    Gerber clothes run EXTREMELY small.

  • I would definitely have some newborn clothes around. If it means anything, my DH and I were both 8 pounds babies and I had a 6 pound baby. He wore NB clothes for 5 weeks. I love Carter's and Child of Mine by Carter's and I think those run pretty true to size.

  • I have found that the Traget brand clothing "Circo" runs big. My DD is almost 6 weeks old and the newborn size just fits her now. The Gerber onsies seem to fit the most true to size with my DD. I thought that DD would be bigger than she was, so I didn't buy any newborn clothes. I am very thankful that a co-worker gave us newborns clothes because my DD didn't fit into any clothes we already had at home.

  • DD was 9lbs 14ozs when she was born and barely fit in newborn clothing. Carters is by far my favorite and they do run true to size. Carters onesies are nice and long, so if you have a tall baby they are great! I agree with the posts above ... gerber clothing runs so small and shrinks!!

Gerber runs extremely small and the onesies are a bit on the thin side. I love the cotton zipup sleep & plays though. I wish I could find them big enough for him to wear at night this spring. That being said, their onesies are proportioned perfectly for him. I loved them all winter for under his sleepers. I'm switching to Carter's & Just One Year to for spring & summer since they look nicer alone than the Gerber's do. They run about true to size for him. I have a bunch of Old Navy hand-me-downs that run just a hair small, but when I tried to buy new ones of the same type of outfits, they were much smaller!
