Yep, the whole thing...but I SWEAR it is not as bad as it looks. I ice for a few minutes first, and then right before the shot DH takes an alcohol swab and REALLY rubs the area, hard. I told him last night this part hurts more than the shot-it sort of numbs up the area. Then, just aim and shoot...kind of like a dart.
When I do it myself I back up to the bathroom mirror so I can see what I'm doing. It general hurts less when I do it than when DH does.
You'll be fine.

ditto this. ever since I took over doing all the shots, I have been much less sore. I think I unconsciously tensed my muscle in anticipation when my husband was giving me the shots, but when I do them myself it's no problem.
I just about had a panic attack the first time I looked at the needle and realized it had to go all the way in!

My nurse told me not to ice because what the cold does is prevents the oil from spreading out. She said if I felt the need to numb the area first, to buy orajel tooth pain gel and spread that on for a couple minutes, clean it off then do the shot. I did not end up using anything and I still don't feel the needle going in.
It looks a lot worse then it is, the shot itself doesn't hurt it is the muscle pain after. I use a heating pad after for muscle pain and after the shot, H massages the area for about 5 minutes so the oil does not lump.

It is not as bad as it looks and I asked for it during IVF 2. I don't ice, but I do put a heating pad on my bum afterward. I also make DH massage the area for a minute so I don't get knots.

My DH gives me the shots and honestly I can't even feel the needle go in. We don't ice or anything beforehand, but afterwards I sit on a heating pad. So far I'm not sore at all, and no lumps (knock on wood, it's only been 7 days).
