Babies: 9 - 12 Months

7 months old - still waking to nurse!

I know I am not alone here & there are others that have this "issue". How to I know if my son is waking out of habit to eat versus being hungry & eating. My Doc. told me that he should be able to go allll night, but he will only go 5 hours.

BTW, he does eat, not just comfort nurse....although he does do that sometimes. My DS will not take a paci.

Hmm sometimes. My DS is also a big boy who likes to eat! Lol

  • Mine does too. He wakes EVERY morning like clockwork around 4:30. If I don't nurse him he'd be awake for the day, so it's totally worth it to me for that extra 2 hours of sleep!  He goes to bed at 7pm, so I figure 9 hours is a very long time for an EBF baby to go without eating.
  • My 11 month old DD still wakes to nurse. I know she can go all night but I think she doesn't eat enough before bed because she wakes at 4 or 5 am to nurse and then sleeps till 8 am. If he's hungry, feed him.
  • Both my girls woke to nurse until they were around 9 months old.  Unfortunately, they didn't listen to what the books thought they should do.  :)  But, take heart because it will happen eventually!

Ditto this. And, technically, sttn is 5 hours.

  • Well, my DS will be 1 year old next month and still wakes pretty much every night. I know that he CAN sleep through the night because he has done it a handful of times, but when he does wake he takes a full feeding. We're actually going to start sleep training on Monday so I'm hoping that if he learns to put himself back to sleep that maybe the night wakings will stop since I know that he doesn't really need to eat, kwim?

  • DS is up 2-3 times per night to nurse. My pedi also said DS should be able to go all night. But DS wakes up hungry so I am not going to deny him food. So yes we are still nursing at night

  • My DS will only go about 5 to 6 hour stretches at night also.  He is 8 months and I was going to give him one more month to see what happens and then start sleep training.  My pedi also said he should be sleeping through the night but sometimes those breastfeed babies take a little longer (her quote).

He will take a full feeding most nights so I think he may be hungry even though he eats a good dinner.

  • Colin still wakes twice at night too.  Usually around 2, 4 and then at 6 sometimes.  If I nurse him at 6 he will sleep until 7:30 and then not nurse again until 9.  He has been sleeping more now but he is sick.  once in awhile he will wake only once at 4 am.  I really hope he starts doing this more often.  I don't foresee STTN for a while...
  • My DD was waking at night to nurse... more than 1 time in fact. She was distracted throughout the day and didn't eat enough and so to make up for that, she started waking up 2,3 even 4 times to nurse.

It got to be too much so we started sleep training. It was a tough road but most nights she sleeps through now. Occasionally she will wake between 4 and 6 and I will feed her and she'll go back to sleep but if its before that I won't feed her and it seems to be working for us.

Your DS may be hungry but if he's not eating at night he will adjust and take in more during the day. Do what you feel is best. I wanted to feed my daughter whenever she needed but it became so tiring getting up all night that I had to do what was was best for my situation. Now we have a happier mommy and therefore a happier baby.

  • DS was still waking at 3 AM, every night, to eat.  And, like you, he really did eat.  But, I talked with the pedi about it, and read Ferber's book, and DH and I decided that it was a habitual night waking.  What helped me realize this was an experiment- I started timing how long he was BFing for, and cut it shorter.  Originally, he was BFing for 8 minutes.  So one night I stopped him at 7.  A few nights later I stopped him at 5.  And worked my way down to him only BFing for 2 minutes, me taking him off, burping him, putting him in his crib, and him going right back to sleep.  If he's only nursing for 2 minutes, he doesn't need those calories.

So we Ferbered his night waking (about 2-3 weeks after Ferbering for naps and bedtime) and until he got sick last week, he was STTN 7pm to 6 am.  Good luck!

  • I've been wondering the same thing about my 7.5 month old DD, but figured that she does it because she is EBF. ?I think it is normal for an EBF baby to wake once to eat between 4 - 6 hours after the last feed. ?Now, if only my DD would go back to sleep after waking for a midnight meal!
  • WOW!!!  5 hours is great!! Lucky u!!! My son .. 7 months old gets up every 3 hours!! :) It'll Pass .. i hope ... wish :P
