Unpopular topic of weight gain (sorry!)...

I know that weight gain questions can be wildly unpopular on this forum, so I apologize if it offends anyone, but I am just hoping to get a bit of perspective on my weight gain. I fear that I am gaining a bit too fast to stay within the targeted 25-35 pound gain (not under or overweight to start with).

I realize that everyone is different but would still love if people would be willing to share how much weight they have/had gained at the half-way (20 week) point. Thank you so much to those willing to share their experiences.  Oh, and I tried to make this a poll but I couldn't get it to work for whatever reason - oh well!

Happy Friday and Happy Spring!

  • I am and basically have been about a pound a week since week 16. I am currently 25 pounds at 26 weeks (and in trouble with my doctor--boooo!).

There are websites that can help you keep track, like babyfit.com.

  • At 20 weeks I had gained 7 lbs. ?Now at just about 25 weeks I have gained 14 lbs. ?Hope this helps!
  • I was overweight to start with so I think that makes a difference. At 20 weeks I was still down a couple of pounds. Now, at almost 25 weeks I'm up a pound or two from starting weight. HTH!

  • I was 20 lbs up at 20 weeks. I thought it seemed a little early but my doc wasn't worried and told me that I'm fine gaining up to 40 total. I gained very quickly in the first 3 months, but have tapered off to a pound a week at this point.

I am up 4lbs as of Monday (which was 19wks) Doc says that I am a-ok

  • As of this morning, 20 weeks even, I'm up 5pounds. I get to see my doctor on Monday and she expected me to be at a 10pounds gain... but as you say, everyone is different, I don't gain weight easily, but I make sure I eat more than enough for me and the baby.

  • I was up 3lbs. at 19 weeks.  I was about 10-15 lbs. overweight at my BFP.
  • I was up 10 lbs at 20 weeks and my doctor had no concerns.
  • I'm up 10lbs at almost 26 weeks, I lost a bit in the first tri b/c of m/s but I've been at about a pound per week since then.
  • I'm not that far along yet but I'll be 18 weeks Sunday and I've gained 9 pounds so far. Sometimes it fluctuates though but it's usually between 8-9 pounds.

If you're gaining too much or too little they will tell you.

  • I'm not sure at 20w, but yesterday at 22w I have gained a total of 19lbs, but I really didn't start gaining weight until about 16w, so I have put on fast.. oops Wink

  • I'm up to 32 lbs. 26 of that was by week 22. My m/w said that if it didn't slow down from there on out, I'd have to meet with the dietician (although I'm already on a self-restricted diet and exercise regimen).  Since that check-up, I've averaged the average 1-lb-per-week, so I think she'll be pleased at my check-up next week.  I know I'm looking now at a total 45 lb. weight gain, but I've had friends gain way more, and I'm motivated to work it off after the baby.  I'm eating healthy and don't look too big, so I'm not too worried.
  • At my last dr. appt. I hadn't gained any weight but that is because I am a little overweight.  I go again on Wed. and I think I have gained a couple of pounds.  We will see.

  • I don't get why these posts get people so bent out of shape. The second you post, people flame away saying "you're pregnant- you're supposed to gain weight!" But the truth is, some of us are gaining more than we should and are worried about it and just needed to vent about it or ask for help or advice. So no worries here....sooooo not offended. Smile

I am only 13 weeks and have gained 14 lbs. I lost a couple- I was up 16! Eeek. Anyway, my crazy appetite has settled a bit so I think it will be easier to keep it in check now and gain only the "recommended" weight the rest of the pregnancy- fingers and toes crossed on that one.

  • At 25 weeks I was up 14 lbs according to the doctor...according to me I was already 2-3 lbs overweight when I got pregnant so I'm counting those as well. I'm up 16-17 lbs from my ideal weight. My goal is to not gain more than 30-35 lbs.?
  • up 20lbs. at 20 weeks, already overweight....gained quickly in beginning, really dont want to put on 20 more but i guess we will have to see....

  • 25 weeks and I've gained 20 pounds. I go by my home scale over the doctors. A- it shows I weigh less :o), and B- I switched doctors at 20 weeks so I dont know how much the two offices scales varied.

  • I'm up 12 pounds from pre-preg, at 25 weeks. I don't remember where I was at 20 weeks, but I was probably up about 8 or 9. Slightly overweight to begin with.?

  • My last appointment was at 22 weeks and I was up 18.5 lbs.  I'm on track to overshoot the range by 5 lbs if I keep gaining a pound a week.  I was at a healthy BMI before getting pregnant and even though my Dr. said 25-35 at the first appointment, she wasn't worried at all about me gaining a possible 40.

  • Thank you all so much for your honest responses (and for no flames!).  It is so interesting to hear how everyone's experience can be so different.  I just realized that I should have probably shared my own experience in the original post - so here goes.  I am just over 19 weeks and think I have gained about 14-15 lbs so far.  My food choices have been relatively good but the quantity is more of the problem - I am always hungry :)

    Thanks again!

  • At 19 weeks I'm up about 11 lbs. I feel like it's more but that's just cause I'm thicker in my midsection than I was.  I'm a grazer and am now starting to have to eat smaller meals or I get mad indigestion.  :)
  • I hit 20 weeks yesterday and as of today I have gained a total of 15 lbs. I did however gain the first 10 lbs within the first 8 weeks, which freaked me out. However, I stayed at the same weight up until I hit 17 weeks. The last 5 lbs have been in the last 3 to 4 weeks. Hope this helps.

  • since you asked nice...

    17 lbs at 22 weeks

  • Im not quite at 20w yet but im already up 20lbs. I blame it on my non-existant morning sickness and ravishing appetite since day one! My Dr. hasnt said a word about it.
  • I'M ALMOST 20 WEEKS AND I'VE GAINED A TOTAL OF 5 POUNDS.

  • At 20 weeks, I was up 8 or 9 pounds.
  • At 16 weeks I am up about 20 lbs.  I was eating junk and A LOT of it in my 1st tri.  Doing a lot better now. I was about 15 lbs overweight when I got my BFP. You sound like you are right on track to me. :)
  • I had lost 7 and now gained 3lbs back. I am overweight so I'm supposed to only gain 10-15 lbs.

I'm not a doctor, but I don't think that is too much at all. ?From all the posts on here it seems pretty normal.?

  • 20 weeks = I was up 21 lbs

Currently at 25 weeks = up 30 lbs. UGGGHHH!?

  • 12 pounds, my doc seems happy with this since she has no said anything about my weight at all!
  • As of today, 20 weeks exactly, I've only gained 3 pounds.  My Dr. isn't worried, she said it'll catch up to me later, which it will, because I am finally over my morning sickness as of a couple days ago.

  • I just went today (22.5 weeks) and the dr told me that I'd gained too much weight since my last visit (7 lbs) buuuutttt....I've only gained a total of 11 lbs. So she just said, don't gain that much again between appoinments. I don't think it's the 11 lbs total she was worried about but the 7 lbs between visits. HTH!

Talk to your doctor though and see what their expectations are for you...
