Gross cat pee question

I have the sweetest little female cat who has not been spayed yet. We have been noticing that around the time she is in heat she starts peeing on stuff. I mean anything left laying out, including a bag of potatoes that were on my kitchen counter! (and I really wanted them for supper) My DH and I were wondering if getting her fixed will help this situation. She is not an outside can and we don't want to get rid of her if we don't have to. Thanks.

Re: Gross cat pee question

  • Yes get her spayed. I have a female and a male cat and I never have problems with them peeing or spraying.

  • We were definately hoping it would help since it gets so bad when she is in heat and our neutered male cat has never done this.
  • My sister just recently got 2 of her cats fixed because they both began to pee everywhere. She said she noticed a difference right away!

  • I think it would help, especially if it happens around the time she would be in heat...but no promises!  One of our male cats (who is neutered) would randomly pee on stuff (SO gross!!!)...thankfully he hasn't done it in quite a while....if he pees on ANYTHING baby related...he is gone SO fast!
  • Get her fixed.
  • Not sure if spaying her will do the trick, but I've had female cats in the past.. They were all spayed eventually but I do remember they always did strange things when they were in heat! I'd say go ahead and get her spayed.

Oh yeah, sorry about your potatoes. Sad

  • You should definitely get her fixed but you should take her to the vet to see if she has a urinary tract infection.  Cats who have infections eliminate in places other than their box.

Also, you should get Nature's Miracle to clean any area where she has already gone (if it is carpet or something that you cannot throw in the wash).  That will completely eliminate the smell so she won't keep going back to that spot (which she will do if it smells like her urine).

    Good luck!

  • Spaying could help, not sure, but it's a good idea anyways.  If it doesn't help have her checked for a UTI or other urinary issue.  My sweet baby Rodney started peeing all over stuff (he's fixed).  Turns out he had crystals in his urine, which the vet missed on several urinalyses.  He almost died before they caught it.  Worst case scenario, I know, but worth keeping in mind.

  • I would recommend getting her spayed either way. There was a cat debate on here the other night and one person who works for a vet pointed out the health benefits to cats to being spayed. I don't know all the stats but I know it reduces their risk for certain cancers. So even if they're indoor cats it's a good idea.

But I agree with the pp who suggested checking about a urinary tract infection. My brother was convinced he'd have to get rid of his cat who started peeing on the carpet. I thought it was a urinary infection and told him to go to the vet. Lo and behold, it was.

I cannot stand unspayed female cats. My dad has two and they pee all over the place. So it could very well be the culprit. I say, go for it after checking out the infection issue.

  • Get her fixed. All of our cats are fixed and we never have experienced anything like this. I'm sure her behavior would stop once you took her to the vet.
  • Thanks! You girls are always great! We have taken her to the vet recently to check to see if she has an infections. The results came back negative, but I think I will have them check again. I talked to DH and we decided to definately get her fixed before our sweet baby girl gets here!
  • Yes, spaying her will help. Do it ASAP. There is no reason to have an unspayed cat - just one accidental trip outside while in heat could result in a litter of unwanted kittens, not to mention she will be healthier afterward. Seriously, call your vet tomorrow and schedule it.?

  • Yes. Getting her fixed will solve the problem. Why wouldn't you have her spayed regardless of the pee issues???

  • My mom has 5 cats, so yes - I would highly recommend getting your kitty fixed. When cats are in heat they do this, even females.

  • It can help and most likely will.  Also, when you take her to the vet talk to them about FIC (Feline Idiopathic Cystitis) if you have already had negative UAs done.  It is one of the most common reasons cats urinate outside of their litter box.  Make sure that you clean the litter box very frequently and are giving her a litter that she likes and is used to.  If she is not the only cat in the house, you need to have multiple litter boxes.

  • Thank you, again. We have not had our girl that long and with the baby on the way getting her spayed has not been top priority on my mind until now. I will be sure to contact the vet tomorrow and schedule an appointment.

  • I definitely agree with pps, but also make sure that her litter box is being cleaned out on a daily basis - some cats (like some people) are neat freaks when it comes to their bathroom!! You should have 2 boxes in the house for her that are in quiet, private areas. Also, you may want to think about changing your litter as well - some cats are picky!! So spaying will DEFINITELY help this issue, hands down, but changing her bathroom setup may help as well.

The other pps who mentioned taking her to the vet were spot on as well - glad you did that, too!!!

    Good luck with your furbaby!
