TTC After a Loss

did you have a sonohistogram?

At my 6 week follow up appt the high risk Dr ordered a sonohistogram for me.

I wasn't really aware that was what it was until a day before the appt (which was canceled) as she just said "ultrasound".

It wasn't until today (via the web) that I found out it would require inserting a catheter through my cervix and into my uterus, filling it with saline and then using a transvaginal ultrasound to take pictures.

I'm not sure why she ordered it, I don't think that I have a mishapen uterus or problems with my cervix.

Anyway, so it was scheduled for today, but apparently you can't have your period while it's being done. They want you to be on day 1-12 of your cycle or something like that. So it was rescheduled for next Thursday.

But I got to thinking that I'm not cool with having a test like this done "just because" and without going into too much history, I don't really have confidence that this Dr has even read my file.  So I called the office and left a message asking for a good reason I should have this done.

So...has anyone else had it?  Any info for me?

Re: did you have a sonohistogram?

  • honestly, it was REALLY uncomfortable for me - my OB suggested it to make sure that there was not left over scar tissue from the d & C and to make sure that there was nothing to interfere with implantation in the lining of the uterus-

I've had an HSG, a sonohistogram and a hysterscopy and the sonohistogram was by far the most uncomfortable - the woman doing it had a difficult time inserting the catheter - but maybe she was just an idiot!

GL I hope you get some answers from your doctor!

  • I had an HSG today actually.  I wrote about it below if you want to take a look.  Not sure if there's much of a difference.

When I signed up with an RE, he recommended it to check my uterus and mostly to make sure my tubes are not blocked.  I went to it today and he actually did find a polyp that needs to be removed.  He thinks that it may be what has caused my m/c's (not sure but possibly) and we would not have known it was there if I did not have the HSG today.  Many girls on this board have had them done so maybe you can get some more experiences before you decide.  They are common for women who have had multiple losses or have had a loss and are now having trouble conceiving again.  I don't think there can be any harm done by it.  Good luck!

Thanks...I didn't have a D&C, and as far as I know...the placenta came out all in one --I pushed it out soon after delivering Nicholas.  Not sure why I need one...I hope I get answers too! I don't want to go through medical testing if I don't have to.

Thanks, this was my first pregnancy..I lost at 20 weeks. I have never had any previous miscarriages. And got pregnant on the first try...so I'm not sure they'd be checking for blocked tubes or anything.  I think that's why I'm so confused as to why it was ordered. I was told that I lost Nicholas due to an infection...like I said, I don't think the Dr even read my file.

Hmmm, that is weird then.  I would ask him why he is recommending it and go from there.

The SHG will show the doctors the uterine cavity in a better way than a regular u/s can.  I had an SHG and it wasn't bad at all for me.  The catheter is very, very tiny (thinner than a skinny little straw).  I took about 1000mg of Advil beforehand just in case I had any cramping.  The worst part is that he did find a uterine abnormality and had to add more saline.  It was cold and started pouring out of me on the floor.  Yeah, I felt like a champ at that point.  It was a tad uncomfortable, but I think that was more because my doc had a stirruped chair thing which I felt I was slipping out of by the minute!

  • I've had 2 of them w/in a yrs time. My 2nd was so much easier than my 1st. My 1st one was ordered after my ectopic and the 2nd one was before we did our ivf cycle.

  • I'm going in for a SHG on Monday.  I actually asked if the doctors could take a look because after my first ultrasound at 8 weeks, my regular OB said that I had a heart-shaped uterus with a septum.  But, after lots of other issues, I ended up with MFM doctors, and they were suspect about that diagnosis saying that as soon as you are pg the uterus is too misshapen to diagnose that.  So, I asked these docs to take a look now that I am no longer pg and my uterus has gone back to normal.  I just want to know everything I can possibly know to not have to go through this again.
