the rabbit test

my boss was just telling me about the rabbit pregnancy test that used to be done.  the rabbit would be injected with the urine of the woman and if she was pregnant, the rabbit's ovaries would change.  initially they had to cut the rabbit open to see if the ovaries changed.  they later figured out how to check without having to kill the animal.  i had no idea!

all those poor bunnies.

am i the only one that did not know about this?

    funny- i was just telling my manager about this the other day... my grandmother told me about this the day we told her we were pg with our son- although in her day they would say "did the rabbit die?"

    An older colleague of mine told me about this years ago. In fact, it was how he mentioned his wife was pregnant. He said "the rabbit died." I hadn't heard about it before then.

    I don't remember all the details but I did look up the history on this once and I believe it is largely a fallacy. I'm feeling too lazy to look it up again but hopefully someone does.

    My grandmother told me about it. Something about the hormones in the urine causes the rabbits ovaries to change. Google "Rabbit pregnancy test" and you'll get some articles on it. I am so glad they aren't killing rabbits anymore, and we just have to POAS

    that's how the conversation started.  the "did the rabbit die" myth.  he likes to google and is trying to avoid doing work today, i do believe. Smile

    I'm going to tell my Grandma about this- she said that she was told that the rabbit died to confirm her pg with my Mom, but I think she believes that the rabbit would not have dies if it had been negative.  Interesting!  And I'm glad no rabbits died to determine my pg test results!

    Gotcha. I knew there were some misconceptions with the test but I couldn't remember what it was.

    It was on an old M*A*S*H episode...they used Radar's rabbit to find out if Hot Lips was PG. Then Hawkeye carefully did surgery on the rabbit to check the ovaries and then he sewed it back up again. I had never heard of it before I saw that episode.

    When my mother found out she was pregnant with me, she and my dad traveled back home to tell the family.  She left a note on her neighbors door to tell them they were going out of town.  The note said "The rabbit died.  Gone to tell the family."  Her neighbor knew immediately what she was talking about, but the neighbor's husband said "I didn't know they had a rabbit!?!"
