Anyone planning to plant a placenta tree? (no worries - no picture in link!)

My cousin just sent me a link to an eHow article on "How to Plant a Placenta Tree." (My eyebrows did shoot into my hairline at sight of that headline in my inbox!) Apparently, she did it.?

https://www.ehow.com/how_2087498_plant-placenta-tree.html?

I have never heard of this before - I didn't know you had the option to take the afterbirth with you. Has anyone done this? And (no flames please - only general discussion!) is this something you would consider doing?

  • i refuse to even look.
  • Loading the player...
  • I will not open that link.?

And will not be taking the afterbirth with me. Or even looking at it.

  • I wouldn't judge someone who did it, but it totally skeeves me out!!!

And I read the thing about how you can freeze the placenta....ok so do people keep this in their everyday freezer?  Like with their steaks and chicken????  I guess I'm easily grossed out about things like that.

ditto, but no flames here if you want to do it...

  • Na, it kind of weirds me out. Plus I have dogs and....no.

  • My mom actually did this with my brother and sister- it was fairly disgusting and something I will not be participating in.  In fact, I think an animal may have dug one up. . .
  • I'd rather donate it so that Taelir can use it as shampoo later on.
  • I am terrified to open that link! The only thing I plan to bring home from hopital that comes out of me is my baby!!

  • Brooke Burke and Matthew McConaughey did it (not together) which means I'll be doing it.

Random fact: Did you know dogs eat their own placenta?

  • I haven't read the link, but I don't really understand it.... I know that some women used to eat it (!!!!) for nutrition many moons ago.. Thank god for modern medicine, eh?

  • I don't even want to read it - all I keep wondering is "What the f*** is a placenta tree and who the heck would ever want to plant one?"

  • O.K. I said I wouldn't read it, but I was too damn curious.  Now I am sorry - that was freakin a** disturbing.  Freeze and defrost your placenta. Indifferent

    Lolol.

  • My parents did this with my brothers' placentas. I don't think that it is gross or creep and supposedly it is very nutritive for the tree as the placenta breaks down and decomposes. We're having our baby at home, so no worries about the placenta doggie bag from the hospital, but I'm not sure what we are going to do with mine. I would plant it too, but we don't have a tree in the back yard, just grass.

Personally, I don't think I could do it. I'm a bit squeamish - apparently, so is DH. He looked like he was going to faint when I showed him the link.?

Though I like the idea of planting a tree (in our case, with regular fertilizer!) for the child. ?

  • My science teacher in high school planted a placenta in his garden and said it was a great fertilizer. Side note: him and his wife enjoyed a nice umbilical cord dinner as well Ick!
  • Oh no! That's nothing compared to EATING IT! My husband and I were watching youtube videos last night of fetal movement and we saw a video for eating the placenta! We had to see what the heck it was. Thinking that maybe it was something different. OH NO! This guys was all excited to cook up his daughter's placenta that was born just a few days before. Nastiest thing we've ever seen, let alone heard of!

    THIS

  • Friends of mine planted a placenta tree, but they aren't gonna live in that house for more than a few years. ?I don't think I would want someone else to have my child's placenta tree! ?(And I doubt they would WANT to have it)

Well, if you have a home birth you can't just throw the placenta in the trash (it's actually against the law to throw it away).  You can save yourself the medical waste fee by feeding your plants...  Tongue Tied

This is the only way I could see myself using it in anyway...
  • Wow. That sounds absurd to me!
