Has anyone else heard that we aren't supposed to use baby powder anymore? The teacher at my childbirth class told us that it isn't good for the baby because the baby will inhale the fumes. Is this just paranoid, or is it a real concern? It just kinda strikes me as ironic that you can't use baby powder on a baby.
Anyone else hear about this? I'll probably ask my pediatrician, but I would love to hear what you think!
Re: Baby powder dangerous?
Yes, it's bad. Our baby care class instructor said not even corn-starch based baby powder is recommended anymore.
they told us the same thing in our baby care class, and they said both talcum and cornstarch based powders shouldn't be used. it's not because of fumes, though. it's because the powder is so fine, the baby can inhale the airborne powder particles and that can damage their delicate lungs.
i also just don't see it as being necessary to use, so i wasn't planning on using it anyway. they suggested letting the baby's bottom air dry a little after a diaper change before putting the clean diaper on.
