Baby powder dangerous?

Has anyone else heard that we aren't supposed to use baby powder anymore?  The teacher at my childbirth class told us that it isn't good for the baby because the baby will inhale the fumes.  Is this just paranoid, or is it a real concern?  It just kinda strikes me as ironic that you can't use baby powder on a baby.

Anyone else hear about this?  I'll probably ask my pediatrician, but I would love to hear what you think!

Re: Baby powder dangerous?

  • As long as it isn't talcum power, but cornstarch, it's okay.

  • I've heard that baby powder is pointless and I don't plan on using it.  I've never heard about it being a health hazard before though.  I just don't think it's necessary.

  • I have never heard this. I don't think a little powder in his diaper is going to hurt him. I'm not planning on powdering his face, so I think he'll be fine.
  • Yes, it's bad. Our baby care class instructor said not even corn-starch based baby powder is recommended anymore.

  • they told us the same thing in our baby care class, and they said both talcum and cornstarch based powders shouldn't be used. it's not because of fumes, though. it's because the powder is so fine, the baby can inhale the airborne powder particles and that can damage their delicate lungs.

i also just don't see it as being necessary to use, so i wasn't planning on using it anyway. they suggested letting the baby's bottom air dry a little after a diaper change before putting the clean diaper on.

  • I put it in my hand and then rub it on. Do NOT get it inside your DD's vagina because it could cause a yeast infection.
  • I would put it on my hand and apply it to the baby's bottom.  It was great in the summer when baby was bigger and crawling.  I would put it on the legs where the diaper and skin met.
  • I don't see any point in using it. I've never used it on my DS, and he's never gotten a rash or anything from being damp.  (Isn't that what powder is for?)
  • The baby book I have warns not to use any kind of baby powder. ?It is bad for baby's lungs.
