If I am breastfeeding, can I use a tanning bed?

I want to get a jump start before the summer, but my coworker told me I shouldn't use a tanning bed if I am breastfeeding. She said that it will dry up my milk. Does anyone know if this is true?

  • Is it safe to use a tanning bed? Will it affect my breastmilk?
The 1997 Breastfeeding Answer Book, published by La Leche League International, states on page 382, "No evidence exists that the nursing mother's use of tanning beds has any effect on her breastfed baby."

It is important to limit exposure so that burning is avoided. Some mothers have reported getting burnt nipples and breasts when using tanning beds. This is extremely painful so be sure to cover your nipples and breasts and use caution. If any vitamins or medications are suggested to enhance the tanning, be sure to check with your health care provider before taking them.

  • Dry up your milk? Absolutely it will.

This is why women in hot parts of the world have to use formula only. AND its why I stopped using a hair dryer. Was getting crusty milk after using it. Had to go curly.

  • In General, tanning beds are not a good idea for the health of your skin, but I can't imagine how it would effect your milk.
  • Um...no that is ridiculous! I say go for it, but in moderation, since it's really not that good for you anyways. And the hairdryer thing..come on! Are you trying to scare this mama!

This is true. My uncle's cousin's baby, who I met one time, had this happen. Still has the scars from the burnt tongue.
  • Just be sure that you don't do them both at the same time.

  • Love yourself the way you are, sister.  If factory standard for you is lily white, embrace it.  You are what you are.  Causing damage to your skin at the cellular level to be a different shade is silly.

Good thing I had to give up breastfeeding, I'd hate to see my hair air dryed and all.

No, no no, there are hotspots just like the microwave.  If she gets a good massage first, she'll evenly spread the milk - it's just like shaking the bottle afterwards.

  • Cooks it down. Like ricotta.

    Ptttthhhhh! I have no idea.

I am so white I am clear. If I had less melanin than I do right now, I would be invisible. I can get a sunburn making toast. I don't tan. I go from white to lobster in 12.4 seconds.

And yet, I am okay with this. Embrace the pale, sweetie.

After many years in tanning beds and in the sun roasting myself I've decided to embrace the pale.  I really don't want to look like an alligator suitcase when I'm 60, I don't think that would be very attractive.
