Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How necessary are sippy cups?

K has been drinking from a straw sippy since about 5 months old, and he's just mastered the reg. sippy, but it seems he likes drinking out of a plain old cup the most. ?I have to say, I'm not a fan of the sippy. ?They are a PITA to clean, and all my experience with them is my nieces and nephews running around with them in their mouths 24-7 and leaving them random places, like behind the couch. ?Is it bad of me to just want him to drink out of a plain cup while seated or at least standing still? ?Maybe he could have a water bottle for on the go.?

Is this a silly expectation of such a young kid? ?Part of me thinks maybe, but the other part is pretty sure there were no such things as sippy cups when we were kids.?

  • Harm drinks from a straw cup great.  My doc said don't worry.

  • Sippy cups have their advantages, such as being spill-proof if you buy the right kind, and your LO doesn't decide to open his mouth and let the liquid spill out.  DD is just as happy drinking from a water bottle (with our without a nipple), straw, or regular cup.  Usually I'll only let her drink from more "open" type containers if she's sitting and I'm there to (help her) hold the cup, unless there's a tiny bit of water or I'm about to change her anyway, then she can spill it all over herself for all I care - she has a blast, and my floors get cleaned.Stick out tongue
Personally, I think that the younger you start a child on something, the better, and you never know what they can do until you let them try (I thought wait staffers were ignorant for giving my 9mos old a cup with a straw (I would just hold the cup up to her mouth and pour it in) until I let her try the straw, and was amazed that she sucked well enough to get the water.  Also, you instill good eating and drinking habits by having him only consume beverages while sitting, and maintain your sanity if they're not lying all over the house.  Maybe it's b/c only keep water in them for the most part, but DD does not drink from her sippy cups 24/7.  As for the washing, I just throw mine in the dishwasher.
You need to do what's comfortable for you and your DS.

  • More power to you if you can get DC to sit still to drink from a cup... I had this rule for eating/snacks for DD for the longest, but it is getting tougher and tougher to enforce as she gets older and more "willful", shall we say. :)  I see no problem using a plain cup, just might mean more clean-up for you.

  • Pedi told me that sippys offer absolutely nothing regarding developmental milestones for the toddler, just that they are a lot easier for parents b/c of clean-up.  DS also prefers a regular cup.  I usually try to give him a sippy, but sometimes will put a tiny bit of water in a regular cut, let him drink that, and just keep refilling it with a tiny bit at a time so he can't spill too much.  He does really well with the regular cup.
