1st Trimester

if my cervix is closed where is the blood coming from?

I had another small gush of blood today.  Nothing severe, thank goodness, but I keep wondering where the heck is it coming from?  Even the other night when I went to the ER.  I was going to ask and forgot.  They told me during the pelvic exam that the cervix is closed, which is good of course, but I have to wonder where the blood could be coming from?  Anyone know the answer to this??

  • It comes all the way down from your brain.

  • It can still come out of your uterus. ?Think about it...when you have your period each month, your cervix isn't opening.?

I'm glad you disagree.  This confused me cuz I thought it would have to in order to let the uterine lining out.

  • while you are having a period your cervix is open and soft same as with ovulation.      but i think in your case its from the outside of the cervix from being irrated
  • Wherever it's coming from it's driving me absolutely nuts!  lol  I am not cramping more than just little pinches once in a while (no more than normal with my 1st healthy pregnancy) and there doesn't appear to be any tissue or clotting so I'm not overly concerned but it still makes me nervous as you can imagine.  On top of that, bed rest is boring!  lol  I've watched alot of movies and tv and I hardly ever even turn on a tv!  lol  Ah well, I'll be wishing I were back on bedrest soon enough when I am chasing around a little baby this fall!  Smile  See how I'm thinking positive...it's gotta help!  Smile
  • Patency and dilation are two different things.  Unless someone has cervical stenosis, any cervix can be manually dilated (during a procedure in the OR).  When someone is menstruating, the cervix is not even 1 cm dilated; however, it is patent enough to allow menstrual blood through.  The same goes for someone trying to get pregnant.  Again, the cervix is not 1 cm dilated - just patent enough to allow teeny tiny sperm through.

In pregnancy, it is definitely possible for someone to have bleeding that originated in the uterus but the cervix still feels closed on physical exam.  Happens all of the time - it is called a threatened miscarriage.

This is the term they used for me.  Makes sense you wouldn't be able to feel an opening that small.  I guess I just have to let nature run its course and hope for the best.  I am one of those people that wants to know all the details of what's going on.  Having no medical training I just need to let go of some control I guess.  It's very frustrating tho!  Sad

  • I hope that your bleeding stops soon! Sorry for your troubles and best of luck!

Thank you.  It's hard to wait but I have no choice so that's what I will do.

  • I've been bleeding since 8 weeks, and still am.

I had two gushes of blood that my doctor told me were a subchrionic hemotomas. (sp?)

It majorly sucks, and is very stressful. I hope the bleeding will stop sooner for you, then it has for me.
