Would you switch pedis? (long)

We have had Allie at the pedi twice in the past two weeks.  She's been screaming for hours on end for about two + weeks and is no longer sleeping at night.  The first time they told us she had a slight ear infection and gave her meds.  They called to check on her and I said she was no better so they wanted to see her again yesterday.

They decided to (finally) start treating the reflux we've been bringing up for months now and gave us a prescription.  DH took it to get filled and then picked it up late last night.  I'm getting ready to give it to her and notice that the bottle says Prednisolone.  I know that Prednisone is a steroid so it seemed odd to me.  I read the pamphlet and there was NOTHING about reflux in there.

I called the pharmacy and they said it is generally not used for reflux and that they recommended checking with the doc.  I called the on-call number (their mistake = emergency to me, haha) and spoke with the doc.  He checked with the PA (who we saw yesterday) and called us back and said definitely not to give her the Prednisolone.  She was supposed to have Zantac (duh!).  He said he wasn't sure what happened but that they'd get it straightened out tomorrow when he got in the office.   He closed the call by saying "good catch" to me which scared me even more for some reason.

What if I didn't read the pamphlet?  How do you confuse a round of steroids with something as simple as Zantac?  They don't even start with the same letter!  I think I may be jaded because my doctor did something similar by giving me medicine that you shouldn't BF on but told me that I could still BF when Allie was 5 days old.

DH absolutely wants to switch doctors but I don't want to jump the gun just yet.  DH also wants to know who is going to pay for the steroids, but that's another story, haha.  I know mistakes happen but is this a forgivable one or would you switch pedis?

  • I really don't have much advice to offer, but I was wondering if you had looked at the prescription before you turned it in? The reason I ask this is I once took in a prescription to get it filled & they gave me the wrong prescription when I went to pick it up. Luckily it was something I took regularly I was just getting my new prescription for the year & I caught it.

  • Yeah, I actually did look at it as we were leaving.  I commented to DH that I didn't know what they gave her.  I said maybe it was the generic form of Zantac or something because it started with a P.

  • If you are not 100% comfortable with your doctor, switch.

     Ditto this.

  • That would be a tough call for me, but I think it would come down to whether DH and I would be able to trust that practice anymore.  I don't know if I would or not.  I do think it's a good sign they called to check on her ear infection.  Getting the prescription that wrong is pretty big, though.  I don't know.
  • It's hard to know exactly who made the error- the PA, the practice, the pharmacist.  I have a friend that takes Acifex for reflux and the pharmacy dispensed Aricept to her, which is for Alzheimer's.  She caught the error when she read the bottle, 2 days later!  That being said, I would never want my child to take a round of steroids if it was unwarranted and I would be irate!  I think the practice needs to investigate the issue.  Most practices copy (or should) all the prescriptions they write.  I believe you need to hear more than "nice catch" from them.  Mistakes do happen, but in healthcare things need to be checked and rechecked so errors do not happen... this is how major injuries happen and people get sued.  I would switch practices only if I knew that the error happened there, how it happened, and if you didn't get so much as a 'sorry' from them.  Otherwise, you will never trust a prescription they give you in the future.  I am sorry this happened to you.  Good thing you read the label.
  • Megan, what would concern me more than the med mix-up is the fact that they waited 2 months to listen to your concerns.  I would probably look for a new one, I'm sure ppl on here could give you some great recos.  We love our pedi, I think the office would be about 15 minutes away from you, though.  Good luck, I really hope Allie starts to feel better soon!

  • generic zantac is ranitidine.

That is really scary.  I would lean toward finding another pedi, if that's what you feel most comfortable with.

  • I would lean toward switching, based on what you said and it sounds like you are not comfortable with the care she is getting.  The incorrect prescription is a biggie in my opinion.

  • That is very scary to me - I am the kind of person that does not tolerate mistakes - yes, we are all human, but I would be looking for a new doctor.  I need to feel 100% confident and comfortable with the doctor!

Ditto this.  Since I've worked in health care for almost 10 years I know that people, even doctors/pharmacists/PAs/etc. are human--we all make mistakes.  That said, I don't think they handled their mistake very well. I think if the medication mixup were the only thing to happen you wouldn't be thinking of switching.  I think a pedi is someone you should be completely comfortable with.

Good luck and hope Allie feels better ASAP!

This. For me, there is no room for error when it comes to DD. I consider this to be a pretty big mistake. What if you had given her the steroid for ten days or whatever and not known? I would absolutely switch.

  • That's a tough one.  I'm not sure what I would do, but as a mom with a child with acid reflux, plus having a handful of friends with kids with reflux, I just want to warn you in advance that Zantac very likely may not do the trick.  Nicholas was finally moved to Prevacid from Zantac after his scope that proved that it had done nothing to help/solve the problem, and I know others whose kids had to be changed to Prevacid or Prilosec, too.  I'm not ttrying to be Debbie Downer, but I just wanted to throw that out there because your daughter has already suffered too long....  I'm so sorry you have to deal with this!
  • This would totally scare me and would really warrant a switch of pedi's IMO.
  • I would switch.  Especially since you have been voicing concerns over this issue for months and they're just now doing something about it.  That is a huge medicine mixup!!!
