3rd Trimester

If I go into a bar and order a vodka on the rocks....

Will they serve it to me? I would never do that, of course, but was just wondering yesterday when I went outwith coworkers and they were ordering drinks and the waiter asked what I wanted. I said a gingerale with cranberry juice, "make it look alcoholic". Is it illegal to serve a pregnant woman alcohol or just extremely irresponsible? If not, should it be? Let's discuss.

Re: If I go into a bar and order a vodka on the rocks....

  • I think it depends on the bar.  I don't think it's illegal but some bars may have policies that won't let you have alcohol.  Even so, you could be ordering it for someone else.

  • some people's docs okay drinking in moderation at the end. If they aren't allowed to serve pregnant women, what would be the cut off? And what if a bartender wasn't sure if a woman was pregnant or not? I'd hate to be the one who said "I won't serve a pregnant woman alcohol" only to find out that she wasn't pregnant....I'll say it's just irresponsible on the MOM's part to be drinking.
  • i dont think it should be illegal...its ok to have a little bit of alcohol while pregnant (usually beer or wine)

at the same time though if i did want to have a beer or a glass of wine while PG i probably wouldnt do it in publidc....just because of the way people are

  • Nope, your body... they would probably serve it to you.  Unless the bar tender wanted to lecture you... which they might.

  • I worked at a chain brewery in college and we had the right to not serve a pregnant woman.  It was in our policy and if the situation occurred the manager would come talk to her and explain that we had the right not to serve her.  I only saw it happen once when I worked there and unfortunately she was already wasted in her 3rd tri and just got up and left.
  • It's not illegal, though probably should be. Alcohol is certainly considered a controlled substance since there are already laws in place governing where, when and to whom it can be sold. I don't think denying a pregnant woman alcohol is wrong, but how would it be possible to verify it? (it's not like you carry around an ID card that says you're NOT pregnant!) LOL

  • I dont' think its illegal for bars to serve pregnant woman, because its hard to tell if a woman is pregnant during the early part of the pregnancy.  Bars have the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason, so they might have there own policy not to serve a woman who is clearly pregnant.

  • I've walked up to a bar and asked for a drink for someone else. No one said anything.. I did try to hide my belly somewhat just in case though.. I felt kind of embarassed anyway.
