Good idea or am I being cheap/picky?

I tried to find DD some basic bottoms to wear as the weather heats up. Hard to imagine today I'm sure! DD went to daycare in fleece pants =) There wasn't much I liked when I went shopping. Most of the skirts were very patterned and only matched the top that they went with and I want them to mix and match. The shorts at TCP were like... Hooters waitress shorts. You know, getting a little shorter on the sides where they curve up? Anyway, I just didn't like the style or cut. I did find a khaki skirt with built in diaper cover.

Anyway - my idea. I was thinking I could take all her 18-24m pants that still fit her and cut them into shorts.  I sew pretty well, it wouldn't look bad. I was even thinking I could add some simple lace to the bottom hem of a few. Is this a good idea or is it "ghetto"? Likewise, I had read somewhere about taking "too short" tops or even onesies and adding material to the bottom to make a dress out of it. What do you think about that? She has a couple cute onesies I hate to give up and I think I can pull it off.

  • I would do... and have. DD has some warm-up type pants for v-day last year and she wanted to wear 'em again. They were way too short so I just cut them into long shorts/capri's. Didn't hem them or anything. That's how they sell them in the store anyways.

Also try Target for shorts. They will usually have them on sale for like $4 in a lot of different colors.

  • could be cute!!  i think you can def. do the pants into shorts and as long as the onesie fits in the arms/belly why not make it a dress?

i've been buying lots of shorts from the boys' section b/c they are more bermuda in length and my daughter does not need to wear booty shorts all the time ;)

  • Wal Mart also has solid color basic bottoms.  I bought DD skorts in black, khaki, navy blue and red.  They are super cheap too.  Like $4 a pair.
  • Great idea! Not cheap, thrifty and SMART!

  • I make pants out of shorts all of the time for Julian. ?Usually they are too short, or he tears holes in the knees. ?I just serge them and then hem them! ?I even take clothes of mine that are going to be donated (if they are nice material, like linen), and make them into shorts for Julian and skirts for Clara. ?I think we all have to be a little thrifty in this economy! ?
  • I say go for it!  If you can sew, work it.

I've also seen something where people add decorative thick (like 4-inch thick) ribbon to the hem of pants to make them longer too.  I think that works better though for older kiddos - 3 yr olds and above.  But it's also worth a shot!
