XP: PIP of DC's rash..what do you think??

I posted this last night on 6-12 m board but thought I'd try here too.

In this pic you can see them on his arms.

I took DS to the dr yesterday afternoon and pedi said looks like an allergic reation to something, not sure what though.
He was on day 8 of augmentin for ear infection which was his 1st time on this med but he's had amoxicillian before.

Dr said not contagious and give benadryl 2x a day.

The red spots look like mosquito bites, slightly raised.  They are on his arms, legs, back & belly & a few on his face.

I've never had hives or welts so of course I'm all worried.

Would you agree with pedi and say it's just an allergic reaction?  How long till it clears up?  I forgot to ask pedi that.

Thanks

  • My DS just got over an allergic reaction that started out looking like this but got much worse.  And the pedi told us the same thing an allergic reaction and that it was classic hives.  We could not come up with the culprit.  Did they attribute it to the antibiotics?  Did they take him off the antibiotics?  we went back today and he is fine.  They will do allergy testing when and if it happens again.  We gave him Benadryl too.

  • Pedi did switch his antibiotics since it may have caused the reaction + his ears didn't look much better so he's on a new round for 10 days, forgot the name.

I really hope it clears up soon.  I hate seeing him like this.  On top of the reaction he still has this double ear infection, swollen gums from teething and a snotty nose :(

  • So sorry he is having to deal with that. I would probably go with what the pedi says,. give the benadryl, and if it does not start to clear up in a day or two I would call the pedi again.

Has he had anything else new besides the antibiotic?

  • If the spots are on all those areas did you use a new laundry detergent, bath soap or body lotion.  My son gets spots on his butt.  It seems like they do not appear when we keep his skin mosturized.  The pedi believes it is a mild form of eczema.

  • My DS had an allergic reaction that started like that. He was on day 6 of amoxicillan (and he has had it before too). It got bad QUICK, he was covered with welts all over his body from head to toe. His eyes were almost swollen shut because of it. We had to give him benadryl because it was so bad. Were you told to stop the augementin?

Yes, we stopped the augmentin and started a new med  yesterday.

So did your pedi document in his chart that he is allergic to amox? and can't have it again?
I'm wondering if we should be aware of this for the future.

  • My dd gets welts on her if I use certain pre-laundry treating sprays. Her welts look like the ones I get when I get mosquito bites (huge red welts). Have you used anything new recently? GL and I hope he feels better soon!

This is interesting.  I never thought about the stain remover sprays.  Thanks for mentioning.

  • Hi there, your post caught my eye since my DD has been to the pedi twice recently with the rash that appears to look identical to your DC's.  Do the red dots have a whitehead in the center of them?  If not, disregard the remainder of my postBig Smile  My DD's did and they determined it was folliculitis.  The first time she was treated with an antibx and it resolved but after doing some research online, it apparently resolves on its own in a few days if left untreated.  One thing my pedi did say was that any rash that you can count the "pimples" so to speak, is not usually an allergic reaction to any food, medicine or product.  They tend to be more generalized hivey-looking rashes when it's an allergic reaction.

So back to the folliculitis, it's basically an inflammation/infection of the hair follicle...harmless but sounds horrible.  If their skin is dry (which many kids are right now), the minor tears in their skin from the dryness cause normal bacteria to infect the hair follicle.  My pedi asked if she had been in a hot tub recently...she hadn't...but we did throw away her tub mat (and thoroughly cleaned her tub toys) wondering perhaps if that was a breeding ground for some bacteria since it's wet and meshed together pretty tightly.  The pedi also suggested a moisturizer daily to keep the skin hydrated and free from microscopic tears.

I googled pseudomonas folliculitis for images and they looked identical to what my DD had.  See if they resemble what your DC has...  Hope this helps and keep me posted!
