1st Trimester

couldn't hear heartbeat

So we had our 2nd appointment today..couldn't find heartbeat on the Doppler, Dr didn't seem concerned she said that it's pretty common at this stage, said since I still have symptoms (nausea vomiting) that she's sure I'm okay, wants us to come back in two weeks to try again and if she can't find it then will do a ultrasound at that point.  I really wish she would have done it today :( I'm going to spend the next two weeks worried sick.  I'm plus size so i figured it would be hard to find but I was hopeful :(.  anyone else not hear it at 11 weeks?

Re: couldn't hear heartbeat

  • I am so sorry that you have to wait 2 weeks.  That just seems cruel.  Good luck!

  • My dr had a lot of trouble today and I am 15 weeks and normal sized. ?I have a home doppler, which helps.

They often have trouble that early, but I know it is nerve-wracking. ?It is too bad he didn't have an ultrasound machine, so he could ease your worries.?

My dr had a very difficult time finding mine...the baby was moving all over the place, and they can only search on the left side of my tummy (I had to have my colon removed due to Crohn's, so I have a permanent ileostomy).  Try not to worry, I'm sure everything is fine!

  • I just went to the dr's on Monday and the nurse hunted for it for 15 minutes and had no luck.  She explained that usually the doppler picks it up at 12 weeks, but that she can usually get it at 12.

The doctor finally found the heartbeat and all was fine, but it took a LOT of searching.  Just rest easy and stay calm...my little monster was trying to hide too.

  • I'm a plus size girl too.  And my doctor couldn't find it last week.  But she immediately did a transvag ultrasound.  Everything looked fine.  I'm sorry you have to wait two weeks.
  • My Dr. couldn't find the heartbeat on Monday but it's because I have an anterior placenta so it makes it difficult to find. She did however give me an u/s to make sure all was ok.
  • well I went at 10 weeks and she couldn't hear it because my placenta was between the doppler and my baby....but she did an ultrasound and we could see that everything was fine!
  • Have you had an u/s prior to today where you've seen the hb?  I am sure everything is fine as long as you aren't bleeding.

  • No, mine couldn't hear it either. She said my uterus could be a tilted and it makes it harder to see. She wasn't worried. I go back in 2 weeks.
  • My doctor tried with the doppler today, and no luck finding it.  I'm not worried since I know it was early to try. I have my first ultrasound on Monday, though, so I don't have to wait too much longer to hear that little heart beat for the first time.

  • I had to go to the doctor on Monday for an emergency appt and she couldn't find the heartbeat on the doppler either so she did a 'scan ultrasound' and found it right away...she said it's normal at this stage to not be able to find it with doppler so that's why she got the 'scan' machine. Baby was right where she put the doppler... bouncing happily around lol.

I would have freaked out on that dr. until they did it right then... I couldn't worry for 2 weeks, the stress is not good for the baby and I would defintely worry/stress myself and the baby way too much.

     Good luck sweetie!

  • thank you ladies, I feel much better now.  After we left I was thinking why didn't I ask her to do it today...  She doesn't know that I'm an excessive worrier, I don't know if they have an ultrasound machine there or not, I assume they do since they're an OB office.  Maybe she was saving me cost? I don't know.  I should have spoke up.  But I feel SO much better now--thank you!!
  • That stinks that you have to wait two weeks.  It is early though and they told me that they might not be able to find it with the doppler.  Try to relax the next couple of weeks and look forward to the next appointment.

  • I was 12 weeks and had already seen the heartbeat on a u/s and the dr still had trouble finding it.  (He joked that mine was getting the in way)  Be patient and good luck!
