First, let me preface my story by saying that I had absolutely no intention of have a drug free birth. After the visiting the doctor on the Thursday of my 39th week, I was told that I hadn't progressed. I was 1 cm dilated and my cervix was long and thick. The baby was very high. So my Dr. told me I probably had two weeks. The next day went as usual, and then came Saturday, when parts of what I suspected were my mucous plug came out. This continued for through Sunday. The mucous was blood tinged, so I was slightly suspect. I was having Braxton Hicks, but I had them throughout my third trimester and I wrote them off as nothing.
That Saturday, my husband and I were stuck in the house all day waiting for a delivery, so on Sunday, despite some cramping and diarrhea, I insisted we go out. We went to the outlets all day and walked miles. I got home about 5:30 Sunday night, cooked dinner and go ready for bed.
Then, with watching desperate housewives, I started having what I noticed were patterned contractions. They hurt, but were tolerable. I cried through one of them...that is when I kind of knew this was it. We started timing them, and they were going from 10 minutes apart to 5 minutes apart quite quickly. Finally, I threw the notepad at my husband and told him to time the freaking contractions because I was in pain. I kept putting off calling the Dr. because I thought for sure this was false labor, but thankfully my husband didn't listen to me. My water broke as the doctor was on the phone. We arrived at the hospital at about 11:50 PM. They got me into triage and checked me and at that point I was 6 cm. I was in total and shock. The doctor was called immediately and told to hightail it to the hospital. At that point I was begging for an epidural. The nurse said the Dr. had to examine me before any epidural could be given. I was in agony. I couldn't stand the pain, but I had the most amazing L&D nurse who got me through each contraction.
The anesthesiologist was waiting outside my door for my Dr to come examine me. Everyone reassured me I would have time for an epidural. When my Dr. finally arrived, she examined me I was 10 cm. She nixed the idea of an epidural and told me I can push when I was ready. About thirty seconds later, my daughter was born at 1:09 AM November 10th, drug free believe it or not. Due to her rapid entry into the world, I tore quite extensively, but I am totally healed. It was a true miracle. I feel blessed each and every day.
