Encouraging the sippy?

DS is a boob-man--that is, he has been ebf since birth.  He just turned one and the doctor cleared us for whole milk.  We've given him a sippy with water in it for months, but he still hasn't mastered drinking from it.  He'll drink from it if we hold it for him, but he doesn't lift it high enough to drink from it himself.  Does anyone know how to encourage proper usage of the sippy?  Also, please receommend the brand of your DC's sippy cup?

TIA!!

Re: Encouraging the sippy?

  • DD doesn't tip the sippy back very well - she only gets about halfway and then gives up.  I end up holding it for her 95% of the time.  At this point I'd rather she actually drink her milk than learn to hold the sippy, since it's still early days of cow's milk.

Her favorite sippy is a Munchkin one from Target - it has handles.  We also have a couple Nuby ones, but the spout on those are slightly different than the Munchkin and DD drips more. All of them are silicone spouts with built-in valves (no spill).

  • DS did very well starting w/ this. It's a soft spout and fairly narrow cup:

  • Try diluted juice, every day until he gets the hang of it in a sippy.  DD loved her juice sippies because it was a big time treat.  She lit up and wanted to hold and would try to tip.  You could also try to just go straight to the straw sippy cups where there is no tip back needed.  Once she got the hang of it then she was ready for milk and is a pro now.  DD uses the disposable take and toss sippies because the valve ones are too difficult for her to get and the no valve ones spill way to easy.
