Copper IUD removal - questions

Hi.

Anyone here have a Paraguard (copper) IUD removed?  What were your experiences?

I plan on getting my IUD removed in July so I can start trying to conceive in August.  I think i remember my doc saying to have it removed near the end of my period so it is easier and less painful.  Does having it removed affect my period in anyway?  Assuming I always have a 28 day cycle should I expect any difference due to the removal?  Will it make me have a period sooner or will i just bleed from the removal (though not my period)?  I forgot to ask that because if so i may get it out a month earlier because i don't want it to possibly take away one month of possibly conceiving.

Thanks so much!!

  • I had the Paragard, and the removal was so much easier then insertion. It only took about 10 minutes from undressing to redressing, and it was just a gentle pull to get it out. It felt weird at the time she was pulling it out (I could feel it sliding out), but no pain, and the next day I felt completely normal.

I didn't have any bleeding post-removal, and my first post-IUD period was fabulous! 4 days instead of the 6 with it in. And two days of twingy cramps instead of four to six days of fetal-position cramps! The length of my whole cycle stayed the same.

As for the problems conceiving afterwards... I don't think you have to worry about that. It isn't hormonal, so you don't have to worry about anything getting out of your system.
