Blended Families

Oh boy..

So when SS is at BM's house he eats school lunch. When he is here we pack him a lunch. We just logged onto his school lunch account & it shows for the past month and a half he has been ordering a school lunch on Fridays (our days) not on the other days we have him - just Friday!

He is 7 and in 2nd grade. What do you think the reasonable explanations are for this? Do you think he just "wants" the school lunch and is throwing the other one away? Do you think there could be a "bully" (SS is the size of a 5 yr old.) and he is too scared to tell anyone. I'm mystified.

LOL.  I would just ask him if he liked his lunch?  Or ask the teacher if he's eating it or sharing?

  • I would just ask him. He probably just wants to buy his lunch but does not want to hurt your feelings, since you make him a lunch.

Just ask him-no big deal. If he acts fishy about answering it, then ask his teacher if something else is going on-do they have a lunch room monitor-our cafeteria did when we were little, and that woman could tell you which kid ate what-she also noticed if you traded foods.
  • When I was little I did this... My mom would pack me a lunch and I would throw it away - or I would buy lunch and throw it away. One of the lunch aides ended up telling on me, haha - as it turned out, I just didnt know what I "felt" like having for lunch at the time.

Does the school do something extra yummy on Fridays like pizza where maybe he decides that he wants that?

Or maybe you could pack him the lunch the other days except Friday and he can eat there?

I hope that he isn't being picked on!! Poor little guy.

  • They have a no sharing/trading policy. And I know he likes his lunch, he picks everything out! He ACTS excited about bringing it. I know it's not too big of a deal, I just feel it's deceptive.

And his father has a rule since SS eats SLOW and is picky that anything he doesn't eat or doesn't finish shouuld be brought back - he was curious to see if we sent too much food, or if he needed more. So that would mean he was chunking it and then lying about eating it all.

  • Well, is school lunch on Friday something extra yummy? Is it pizza day or chicken nuggets or something he really likes?
I would just let him know that it is okay to eat school lunch if he wants to, but he needs to let you guys know and that on those days you won't pack him a lunch.

I was going to call and ask for the menus to see if they did something special on Fridays. If he wants to eat the school lunch - as much as it grosses me out, he would be allowed to. I just wish he wasn't deceptive ab it. I hope he isn't picked on either & I doubt it- for some reason that just popped into my head as an explanation b/c it seemed strange that he didn't just say "can I eat school lunch on Friday" so I assumed he was hiding something.

I feel so silly ab freakin out ab this. I guess it's just one more thing on top of a load...he's been gettin' into trouble at school lately too.

  • Yeah, I would definitely not make him feel bad about it or punish him - just find a way to ask nicely if it's something he'd rather have, or if somebody's bugging him - something like that.  OR - ask if he'd like it if you came to school and had lunch with him.  My kids LOVE that, regardless of what lunch is.  But - it opens that door to talk about it.

Don't freak out about it - it's probably just some weird kid thing, and no big deal!

  • What do they serve on Fridays?  Pizza perhaps?  I think you may be overreacting a bit.  I think it is more that he likes what the school serves on fridays, as for what he does with you lunches, who knows but he may just not want to hurt your feelings or he may be concerned he will get into trouble if he tells you.  Just ask.
  • yeah...friday is pizza day for my kiddos so they will usually buy.

funny memory of when I was kid....my mom was a major health freak and would stuff our lunches with fruits and veggies.  I was so jealous of the other kids who got twinkies and cookies in their lunches.  I would rarely eat the healthy food and I would bring the fruits and veggies back home and throw them under my bed.  Don't ask me why I never threw them away at school.  That would have been the smarter thing to do Big Smile  my mom did eventually find the food and I was in serious trouble.  Not funny at the time but I can laugh about it now.
