Is anyone JUST buying these 2 items in terms of bedding? I am so torn that DH and I actually had a "fight" about it. I started telling him how much the different bedding choices I like would end up costing ($200-300) and then I realized he was right in that we really only need sheets and a crib skirt.
I know he IS right and we certainly don't need a bumper (i'm not sure I even feel comfortable using one - I go back and forth) and we're going to have so many blankets (that can't even be used IN the crib for some time) that spending money on a quilt seems silly too.
But then I see all these cute bedding sets (like the PBK dot one) or custom made ones on Etsy and feel like I'm missing out or doing something wrong. Will our crib look too plain and boring with just cream sheets and bed skirt?
Here is our inspiration pic again to give you an idea of the look I am going for (except we'll do all black furniture and opposite walls: taupe w/ a cream tree).
I see all these cute nursery pics on here and just wonder if I will have made a mistake if I just go the simple/cheap route of sheets and skirt, but it does seem like a waste of money.
Anyone else doing this or having these thoughts?

Tres Chic JCM!!! Me likey very much.
I'm not using bumpers or what have you. Just an amazing skirt which I will have my seamstress make and then the fitted sheet. I may use a breathable bumper but that remains to be seen at this point. What I will do though is killer drapery treatment - I'm thinking full panels, with a matching valance on the outside of the panels and then wood blinds with contrast tape.
I tend to do applique in the form of ribbon or trim on my panels and valances and I'm sure the babe's room will not be any different. Across from our window is the closet with a transom on the top of the doorway. I may take the door off and repeat the same treatment there to balance out the room and make it more symmetrical as well.
I'm really leaning to doing a navy and white room today.....?
I didn't even to the skirt! I bought sheets and a breathable bumper and that was that. Actually, I bought a mattress cover and something to protect the mattress from being damaged by the coils on the crib, too.
So far, neither DD has complained about the lack of a "bedding set". :-)
I knew I wanted the breathable bumper and I wouldn't use the bumper from the set. I knew I wouldn't use the blanket that came with the set. Even the skirt.....both of my girls stayed in the co-sleeper until around 6mo. By then, they were nearly pulling up and I had to lower the crib and the skirt would have been dragging on the floor.
I'm happy I didn't spend the money. Especially since both of my DDs have horrible reflux. I change sheets a LOT and some of them just don't come clean (nothing worse than Alimentum vomit) and I throw a lot of sheets out.
the set we wanted was WAY too expensive (found it in a boutique) and the only piece sold separately are the sheets. so we are getting those, bought a neutral bumper that we will use when it's appropriate, and don't have a blanket or a crib skirt. we're thinking of asking MIL or SIL to make us a crib skirt, as they both sew, and I don't.
its your nursery, do whatever you want!!
I am registering for the whole set. I know exactly what you saying though, I just really want the whole set since the theme of DS's nursery is centered around the bedding. If you aren't going to put the comforter or bumper on the crib anyway, noone will know if you have it or not. And when baby gets a little older, if you decide you want a comforter, you can always buy or make a cream colored comforter.
thanks!
Looks like you've gotten a lot of responses already, but I'm going to respond anyway :-)
I don't plan to use a bumper at all. I'm going back and forth on the quilt -- I can't use it in the crib, but I could use it once I turn the crib into a toddler bed.
When I set up the crib, it's definitely going to just have the crib skirt and sheet in it. I was a little worried about it looking plain, but I think the trick is to find really cute sheets. I've found some adorable patterned sheets that I LOVE. I think these plus a cute bumper will go a long way towards making the crib look cute (and safe!).
We're doing just sheets and crib skirt.
The bumper worries me because of sids/suffucation.
Oh and all of PBKs stuff is sold as separates so you can still get the cute pieces that you want.
