Anyone JUST doing sheets and crib skirt? (XP)

Is anyone JUST buying these 2 items in terms of bedding? I am so torn that DH and I actually had a "fight" about it.  I started telling him how much the different bedding choices I like would end up costing ($200-300) and then I realized he was right in that we really only need sheets and a crib skirt.

I know he IS right and we certainly don't need a bumper (i'm not sure I even feel comfortable using one - I go back and forth) and we're going to have so many blankets (that can't even be used IN the crib for some time) that spending money on a quilt seems silly too.

But then I see all these cute bedding sets (like the PBK dot one) or custom made ones on Etsy and feel like I'm missing out or doing something wrong.  Will our crib look too plain and boring with just cream sheets and bed skirt?

Here is our inspiration pic again to give you an idea of the look I am going for (except we'll do all black furniture and opposite walls: taupe w/ a cream tree). image

I see all these cute nursery pics on here and just wonder if I will have made a mistake if I just go the simple/cheap route of sheets and skirt, but it does seem like a waste of money.

Anyone else doing this or having these thoughts?

  • the bedding i want doesnt come in seperates, so we had to get the whole thing. I will only use the sheets and skirt and hang the comforter on the wall as a hanging and maybe use the bumper later on, or never. I also got a breathable bumper...its more important to have a safe baby than a pretty and cute nursery...

  • since the blankets can't go in the crib anyway, I dont' think it's crazy to just have a skirt and sheet.  The bumper is something I go back and forth on too.  I think we will probably end up getting a bumper.  But having matching blankets isn't high on my priority list!

  • Tres Chic JCM!!! Me likey very much.

I'm not using bumpers or what have you. Just an amazing skirt which I will have my seamstress make and then the fitted sheet. I may use a breathable bumper but that remains to be seen at this point. What I will do though is killer drapery treatment - I'm thinking full panels, with a matching valance on the outside of the panels and then wood blinds with contrast tape.

I tend to do applique in the form of ribbon or trim on my panels and valances and I'm sure the babe's room will not be any different. Across from our window is the closet with a transom on the top of the doorway. I may take the door off and repeat the same treatment there to balance out the room and make it more symmetrical as well.

I'm really leaning to doing a navy and white room today.....?

  • We'll be doing a more minimalist approach (crib sheets, probably a bumper, maybe the skirt). I feel like so much of the baby stuff is JUST like wedding crap: there's a lot of things that other people will make you feel like you need or you aren't doing 'justice' to the event. There are some cutsy things of course that I want and I'm not going to deprive my child of toys or anything, but the way I see it, what I don't spend on a useless quilt that just looks pretty will turn into money for (insert worthwhile activity here - ballet, music lessons, swimming, college savings, etc.). Don't worry about buying into all the frills and feeling like a bad mom because of it - in my book, if you're tighter on cash, you're a better mom for providing what's needed and not what's pretty and popular. Best of luck!
  • I didn't even to the skirt!  I bought sheets and a breathable bumper and that was that.  Actually, I bought a mattress cover and something to protect the mattress from being damaged by the coils on the crib, too.

So far, neither DD has complained about the lack of a "bedding set".   :-)

I knew I wanted the breathable bumper and I wouldn't use the bumper from the set.  I knew I wouldn't use the blanket that came with the set.  Even the skirt.....both of my girls stayed in the co-sleeper until around 6mo.  By then, they were nearly pulling up and I had to lower the crib and the skirt would have been dragging on the floor.

I'm happy I didn't spend the money.  Especially since both of my DDs have horrible reflux.  I change sheets a LOT and some of them just don't come clean (nothing worse than Alimentum vomit) and I throw a lot of sheets out.

  • I keep going back and forth as well, but I think we'll end up just doing sheets and a breathable bumper (bought it yesterday).  I just can't justify spending $200-300 on bedding when the kid will not even care!  I would rather save the money for when they are old enough to have an opinion on how their room is decorated.

  • the set we wanted was WAY too expensive (found it in a boutique) and the only piece sold separately are the sheets. so we are getting those, bought a neutral bumper that we will use when it's appropriate, and don't have a blanket or a crib skirt. we're thinking of asking MIL or SIL to make us a crib skirt, as they both sew, and I don't.

its your nursery, do whatever you want!!

  • I don't plan to get a bumper so I'm buying mine as seperates.  i'm buying 2 sets of sheets, the crib skirt, and curtains.

  • I am registering for the whole set.  I know exactly what you saying though, I just really want the whole set since the theme of DS's nursery is centered around the bedding.  If you aren't going to put the comforter or bumper on the crib anyway, noone will know if you have it or not.  And when baby gets a little older, if you decide you want a comforter, you can always buy or make a cream colored comforter.

  • We're just doing sheet and crib skirt. I'm also going to get a stroller blanket in the same print as the bedding I want. This is good for us because it's really going to save on money (the set I want is almost $400, so it will end up only being about $120 or so), and we won;t be using a bumper or the comforter. I'm going to make some really pretty curtains, get a nice area rug and focus on the decor more
  • I am considering too just to do the sheets and skirt....but it seems like I can only find white, pink, blue and yellow. I'd like a little more variety. To me some of the crib sets are a little to gaudy to us.....we like the minimalist looks and would rather have decorate with other things.
  • I'm just doing a sheet and skirt.  Haven't decided on the bumper, yet.  The bedding sets are cute, but since I can't really use most of the pieces, I'm going to use the rug, artwork, and accessories as the primary decor elements.
  • Thanks for all your thoughts... you just made DH a very happy man  and now I can spend the money on other things to decorate the nursery.  I'm thinking the organic ecru sheets from Baby Gap (only 19.50 each!) and possibly some cute patterned sheets if I find them in a light color/cream/bird print or something and now I just need find a cream skirt.  So far everything I've see at PBK or Gap is either white or colored and since our furniture is black, brown things are iffy.
  • I forgot about this website: www.sheetworld.com. They have crib sheets and you can custom order the dust ruffle if you'd like....much cheaper than a full set.  They have graco pnp sheets too.

    thanks!

  • I'm only doing sheets and crib skirt.  I think what I will have on the walls will look good enough.  My grandma is a quilter and I've asked her to make me a quilt with colors that will match the room.  I wouldn't use bumpers anyway.
  • That's what I did and it worked out just fine. I registered for the quilt which I got but never used so I saved myself a ton of money. And BTW, buy 3-4 sheets so that you never run out.
  • We're not even doing the skirt.  When we lowered DD's crib to the lowest setting at 9 months we had to take it out, anyway, so seems silly for our purposes for 9 months and then to the attic.

  • Looks like you've gotten a lot of responses already, but I'm going to respond anyway :-)

I don't plan to use a bumper at all.  I'm going back and forth on the quilt -- I can't use it in the crib, but I could use it once I turn the crib into a toddler bed.

When I set up the crib, it's definitely going to just have the crib skirt and sheet in it.  I was a little worried about it looking plain, but I think the trick is to find really cute sheets.  I've found some adorable patterned sheets that I LOVE.  I think these plus a cute bumper will go a long way towards making the crib look cute (and safe!).

  • I found a lady on etsy that makes the skirts and so I am giving serious thought to just having a skirt made and going with a skirt and crib sheets.
  • We are thinking of just getting some cute sheets and then a few cute blankets (that can also be used elsewhere).
  • I'm leaning the same way.  First, I haven't found anything that I'm in LOVE with and second, my MIL is an amazing seamstress and has probably already made 12 blankets! I was thinking more of just buying lots of different fun sheets and dressing up the room that way because I know the comforter that comes in the whole set won't be used and I won't use it as a decoration like some people do.  SO....I'm leaning on the sheets and crib skirt and POSSIBLY a lightweight crib bumper-they have them at BRU that are the breathable kind but only come in plain colors.  GL!!!

  • We're doing just sheets and crib skirt.

The bumper worries me because of sids/suffucation.

Oh and all of PBKs stuff is sold as separates so you can still get the cute pieces that you want.
