Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Do you have a very active 9 month old??

My DS is into everything.  He scoots around the whole house and tries to pull the cord to the lamp.  He definitely keeps us going.  He grabs anything he can get his hands on.  He doesn't like to be held anymore, he tries to squirm right out of my arms.

I guess it's time to finally child proof.  Yeah!!!!  Do you discipline your 9 month old?  I know it's still such a young age, but our Pediatrician told us to start at 6 months.

Re: Do you have a very active 9 month old??

  • Yes, DD is very active, especially now that she is crawling.

I say "no" and "ah ah" and shake my head at her when she is getting into something she shouldn't - the dog's water bowl is the first thing that comes to mind.

  • OMG YES!  He is so active I'm completely exhausted at the end of each day...I feel like I've been in a wrestling match.  By that last diaper change of the night, my arms are actually so sore, they are shaking as I try to hold him down to put his pj's on.  We baby proofed early because DS was crawling by 6 months, but I swear nothing short of a padded room could contain this kid.
  • Yes, my 9 month old is into absolutely everything - plus he just took his first steps this week - so we are SOOO in trouble. He understands "No," so I tell him that when he's into something naughty and then redirect him. I won't start disciplining him with time-outs until he's 2.

What kind of discipline did your pedi suggest for a 6-month-old?

  • OMG yes! They think I am a jungle gym. They are both crawling and trying to stand. They wanted to be held all the time. The good news is now I might actually lose those last 20lbs playing with them:)

  • Pedi told us that the best form of discipline at this age is distraction.
  • DD is 10 months but YES!  She is such a fast crawler and always heads for whatever I don't want her too.  With DD #1 we had baby gates up to contain her between two carpeted rooms but with #2 we are selling our house and didn't want the gates up.  She is drawn like a magnet to the un-carpeted areas of the house!  We will put a removable gate on the stairs once she pulls up and attempts to go up them but so far she just plays the bottom on like a drum.  :)
  • I must be the minority here, but no! My son is 8 1/2 months with no interest in crawling yet. He loves to just sit in one spot on the floor with his toys and play or play in his jumper. He also likes to practice 'standing' and walking around with our help. Maybe he will go right to walking and skip crawling? I was worried about the no crawling at first, but now I'm just going with the flow on it. :)
