induction that did NOT lead to CS?

I keep hearing stories of women being induced with pitocin and eventually getting a CS. I'm just wondering if any of you have had a successful vaginal delivery after receiving pitocin... I'm sure there are plenty of women out there who have, I just havent come across any of them yet, sadly.

Thanks :)

  • Yes, there are lots of us!  I was induced with DS #1.  I had him 5 hours after the start of pitocin.  My step sister was just induced last week, had a vaginal delivery.

  • My water broke, but I didn't have contractions on my own so I was put on pitocin.  I had a successful vaginal birth.
  • i wasn't induced but several people i know IRL were and they had successful vaginal births.
  • Yep. Took two tries but I'm happy with how it all turned out :)

  • I did.  My water broke, but I was not dialated at all.  So, after they waited a bit to see if my body would start on its own (which it did not), I had pitocin that ended in a vaginal delivery.
  • I did but I also had a doc who didnt put me on a clock.  Its all about what your doctor will "allow".  Mine was a 27 hour labor but I was fine and baby was fine so she let me go past the 24 hours they normally give you for an induction.  It took 23 hours to get to a 4 but then I went from a 4 to a 6 and 6 to 10 in 4 hours!  Most doc would have said oh your at a 4 and not progressing lets do a C.

Same here.  I think the inductions that lead to c/s are usually more of the elective variety.  If your body and/or baby isn't ready, induction is a lot more likely to fail.

  • Yup, me.  I was induced 12 days past due date with cerivadal and pitocin. After 22 hours I had my DS, he did need the vacuum though to come out.
  • I was induced with both of my girls using pit and no c-section!
  • Anecdotal, but my friend delivered her baby vaginally this Tuesday morning after getting induced Sunday. Don't know how she was able to survive that long or why they even let her go that long (usually they are trying to get you out that door!), but she did it.
  • Before I was induced I asked the same thing :)  I even saved the link to all the replies, because I found it so encouraging! GL!

  • Induced and no c.  Very easy birth.
  • I went into labor on my own but I stalled at 6 cm for over 6 hours.  Started on pitocin and had a vaginal delivery.  I'm actually surprised because I was in labor for 39 hours.  I thought for sure they would have thrown in the towel on me.  I'm glad they stuck it out with me.

    Oh awesome - thank you!

(and thanks to everyone for your responses!)

  • i went into labor on my own but was administered pitocin since i had stalled at 3cm for 2 hours. ?i delivered my son vaginally later that day.
  • I was induced and didn't have a CS.  Ended up with a 3.5 hour labor than vaginal delivery.  But I was already 4.5cms before they started the pitocin I just wasn't have consistent or noticeable contractions. Full birth story in blog.

  • Yup, me. I think being progressed before the induction is key. Otherwise, it's like banging your head against a brick wall (or your baby's head, for that matter). I was 2cm when they started the pitocin and delivered in under 6 hours.

My water broke on its own, but I was not progressing fast enough so they gave me pitocin. ?I had a successful vaginal delivery after 13 hours of labor.

This is kind of a ridiculous assumption.  My doctor refused to induce me until it was no longer safe for me to be pregnant.  They tried to ripen my cervix with prostaglandin gel after I was over a week overdue.  I technically went into labor on my own, and after 36 hours, some pitocin, and a baby's fluctuating heartbeat, I was told I needed a c-section.  I never dilated past 1 cm.

These kind of assumptions by those who have never experienced a c-section are why women can feel badly about c-sections and feel like it's her own fault.

On the flip side.  I know a woman IRL who was induced and had her baby vaginally, and she was only induced because she didn't want to go past her due date.  Totally elective.

  • I did!  I was induced at 37 weeks with no progress.  I went in for Cytotec the night before and started pitocin at 6 am.  Delivered at 5:32 pm.  Very positive experience!!
  • Me! ?Pitocin didn't really do anything for me. ?Didn't really progress until she broke my water.

  • Yup... I had DD less than 24 hours after starting pitocin.
  • I was induced due to pre-e, and was not progressed at all when they started the induction. I was given misoprostil to soften my cervix and start the contractions, and 12 hours later, they started the pitocin. I delivered my son vaginally 12 hours after the pitocin, and had a great delivery. We were close to having a c-section because my son's heart rate was dropping after each contractions when I was 8 cm - we pushed through and found out that it was because his cord was wrapped around his neck twice (nothing to do with being induced). I know it sounds silly, but I am glad that I developed pre-e and got induced 2 weeks early - otherwise, he would have had more complications had we waited longer. It was a blessing!
  • I just got induced last Friday and delivered vaginally. I didn't want to be induced but had to after an NST. I was only in labor for a total of 12 hours, start to finish. I haven't had a chance to write my birth story yet, but it is possible and ended up not being as bad as I had heard/imagined.

  • Me too! Induced for pre-e and had vag delivery. Took awhile but will do it again if needed! GL!
  • I did.  My labor was very long, but I had a successful vaginal delivery.

  • I was induced at 39 weeks.  They broke my water and started me on pitocin at the same time - I delivered DD 6 hours later.  I was 1.5 cm dilated and 80% effaced beforehand.  It couldn't have gone any smoother!
  • I was induced at 38 weeks for pre-e. I labored for 7 hours, no-epi, and had a successful vaginal delivery.
  • Yep!!! I got put on pitocin and about 5 or 6 hours later i had my baby vaginally!!!
