ILs...VENT and help brainstorming retirement favors...

GRRRR!!!  There are lots of incidences in the past with my ILs about being unthoughtful, and just selfish...yes, i realize i'm a special snowflake.  LOL  ANYWHO,  hubster and I were in charge of FIL retirement invites...we got them out, IN SPITE of having to keep waiting on MIL for details (she's been planning a low-key party for a year, and just COULDN'T get her act together)

Now, SIL, who is in charge of like 30 favors, just doesn't have any "good" ideas for retirement favors (and somewhere on there, they want it to say "dad")  Oh, btw..the retirement party is the 17th...and then they throw "well, you're the creative one, don't YOU have any ideas?" Uh, yeah, i prolly WOULD have ideas if it was MY DAD, cuz i would have been thinking about it for awhile because he's the center of my universe, and i prolly wouldn't try to be too cheap because it's ONLY 30 favors or so...but thanks for giving me a week to think about it.
GR!  Any suggestions, ideas so i don't hurt these imbeciles?!
Thanks for making it this far, and cookies and coffee/wine for those that made it...

  • It's kind of hard to suggest anything with no information about what his hobbies are and what career he's retiring from. My dad works for Chrysler, so for his party I would do something car related, such as car models he worked with ranging from the start of his career there till now, and decorate them with little sayings or dadisms. Something edible is always good too, like chocolate candies made out of a mold that represents what he did. Sorry can't be more helpful. Tell us what he's retiring from and we'll have better suggestions.

  • Does this party have a theme?

When I think of retirement,  I think of how much traveling can be done. Is there a place FIL likes to go when he retires? Or hobbies he wants to do? Maybe take it from there.

  • sorry, guys....didn't mean to be so vague/not give enough info...i haven't been part of a retirement party in awhile...you know, i don't even know what the theme is?  I'll get back to you...he worked as an engineer for hamilton  standard, so lots of airplane parts...his hobbies; rebuilding old cars, staying up to date on tech stuff, travel...that's what i know.

To be honest, my first thought was just to get chocolate letters that spell out "Dad" & be done with it. That's what they get for putting me in this position a week before the party. But since he worked with airplane parts & likes to travel, could you maybe do something related to airplanes?

  • retirement party favors? i wouldn't ever dream of getting a favor at such an event (and didn't give any when we threw one for my dad 15 years ago) but... edible is always best IMO so maybe some chocolate cigars or cookies??

I agree with this. I kind of hate getting favours at weddings, too. Unless they're edible I feel like they're kind of just useless junk. I usually just throw them away.

  •  I agree that favors are a bit useless...but that might be hard to tell  your ILs.  Edible would be the best way to go..does he have a favorite coffee or chocolates you can give out samples of? (starbucks?)  Then put a little saying on each..
  • How about cookies shapped like planes? Or in the shape of one of his hobbies - fish for fishing or crabs if he plans on being by the ocean.

  • Thanks for everyone's input.  I agree with a couple of posters in that favors, especially for retirement aren't necessary...but it's not my gig.  I just wish they had said something a MONTH ago at least. Thanks for everyone's excellent ideas...i'll definitely present them to MIL.
