Because I realize they're both mega popular names but I think I don't care at this point. We've changed our minds and aren't going to use Emerson...or at least I don't think we are.
I know of a couple Madeline's, but not too many Olivias in my circle. When I was a camp counselor years ago, there was an Olivia in my group... It's funny how uncommon it was back then and how popular it's becoming.
In the past couple of years, I know one of each being born to friends (and I don't know too many people who have had kids recently!). However, the Madeline was actually Madelyn.
It's such a regional thing. I know Olivia is popular nationally, but in our area (Virginia) I don't hear it much. I don't know any Olivias. I also don't know any Madelines, but I do have a cousin named Madelyn (who is 6.)
It's kind of like the name Caroline. On a national level, not super-popular. But in my town there are Carolines EVERYWHERE!
I only know my own Madeleine (and none with your spelling) and one Olivia.
I think if the name is classic and beautiful, it's going to come in and out of vogue without much warning. And I honestly wouldn't worry about it. Those names are popular for a reason--they are really nice names.
I know 3 Olivias and 5 Madeline/Madelyn/Madeleines (not to mention a few more Madisons...and they all go by Maddie). But I agree that it is regional. I know about a million Charlottes, for example, and that name doesn't seem too popular other places.
I actually know zero Madelines (and I'm a K teacher, so you'd think the trendy names would be hitting me by now--we have Aidens out the wazoo) and the only Olivia I know is 30+ years old.
I know 2 Olivias and one Madeline. All 3 are older girls, like 10 years +. I have yet to meet a baby with either of these names. Funny since it's so popular! I hear more Madisons, Emmas, and Isabelles than anything else around here.
I, personally, only know 1 Madeline. Although I've encountered both in toddler classes, etc. But they really are great names, you can't go wrong.
I've been trying to avoid popular too..but I was one of 5 Kristins on my HS lacrosse team..and looking back it was fun to have other people with the same name.
I have Emerson on my list too. Most people don't seem to be fans of it.
I only know 1 adult Olivia and no Madeline. You know babynamewizard has the mapper, so you can see how the popular names trend in your state? https://namemapper.babynamewizard.com/
It looks like Olivia is most popular in the northern boarder states and the northeast. Madeline isn't even in the top 100 in some states (for last year).
I know of one MadeLYN (probably about 5 years old now), and one Olivia (1-2 years old), both in Masschusetts. I know those names are gaining a lot of popularity these days, but those are the only 2 I actually know.
I only know one Olivia and I don't know anyone with the name Madeline. They are absolutely beautiful names so it's no wonder they are popular. I do like Emerson a lot (although I think of it more as a boys name) and I think it would be pretty as a mn. Olivia Emerson or Madeline Emerson don't sound bad.
No Madelines, but three Madisons (so lots of Maddie's)
I think they are both pretty names, I especially like Madeline

I noticed this website lists each name seperately for each spelling. So Ayden and Aiden have two different rankings.
I know two Olivias. One is 27 and the other is 6. I know one Madeline who is 2. Ditto pp who said they're popular because they're timeless, beautiful names. I would not worry about your DD being one of seven in her class or anything like that. (Both of them are so much better than Emerson, btw!)
I work at a children's hospital...there seem to be more Madelines out there than Olivias. Both are such beautiful names, I understand their growing popularity I think Emerson is beautiful too!
I don't know any Madelines, and only know of one Olivia. ?They are both gorgeous names. ?
Also, the more people name their child Apple and Ickett, the less it matters if a name is "popular". ?I don't think it will be like in the 80s when everyone was named Jennifer- people are thinking way outside the box these days.
Re: How many Olivias or Madelines do you know IRL?
Where I live, Olivia is hugely popular. Madeline not so much. I really like Emerson. I would go with that.

p.s. Evan is SO cute! I love his little smile.
I know 3 Madelines and only 1 Olivia. But I believe that Olivia is actually the more popular name. Both are very pretty names.

My SIL (who is 9) is Madeline and has a Madelyn in her class as well. J&K+8 have their Madalyn as well, so maybe it's more popular among older kids.
I went to high school with an Olivia, and she's the only one I've ever known.

I don't know any Olivias or Madelines. I'm never around children either though. I'm glad you are getting rid of Emerson- yuck.
I know lots of Madeline's/Madison's. They all have to go by nicknames in their classes there are so many.
Olivia is nms...I say stick with Emerson!
