Babies: 9 - 12 Months

BFers 9month+

How often was your DC nursing (or getting BM bottle) around 9 months?

DD was getting 2 bottles at daycare and nursing 3 times at home (morning, after work, and bedtime).  Lately the after work feeding seems to be getting harder.  She gets so distracted and pulls off a ton.  She doesn't seem to get much.  I'm thinking she may be getting ready to drop it.  But I feel like only eating 4 times a day isn't much...or is that normal around this age?

She only gets a total of 9oz of BM at daycare so its not like she's getting a bunch.  Obviously I have no idea how much she's getting at nursing sessions.  She definitely gets more in the morning and bedtime than the after work one though.

Should I try to keep the after work one or let it go?  I'm getting so annoyed with this feeding because this is the one where she is fussy and pinches, scratches, etc.  It just doesn't seem like she's overly interested in it.  But if I offer she'll certainly nurse a little but she plays around a lot too.

Re: BFers 9month+

  • We have good days and bad. Today was really good. No pinching or biting and she stayed latched most of the time.

I nurse her in the morning and evening and I pump twice at work. She gets 2-3 bottles at daycare. We have to supplement because my supply has totally tanked to pumping 3-4oz a day.

But, I'm just not ready to be done yet.

  • DS has also become a lot more distracted lately.  Have you tried feeding in a quiet room without distractions and does he still pull away a lot?  Could be teething, ear infection, or illness as well if he's not wanting to eat as much...

We feed once in the morning before daycare (7:30 or so), I feed him on my early lunch hour at 11,  5 oz bottle at 2-3, and then I feed him again around 6-7.  He usually wakes between 1-2 times a night and I usually feed him then as well.

  • My DD nurses 4 times a day and has three solid meals. She's been on this schedule for a few of months now.
  • At 6.5mos Alaina was taking four 7oz bottles of BM a day.

(We switched to EFF at 7.5mos but I had turned to EPing for a month prior so I actually got a sneak peak at how much she was taking even back then.)

  • I nurse 4 times a day, and DD gets one bottle of BM before bed.  She also eats 3 solid meals a day.  We've been on this schedule for quite a while.  I think she's probably going to be ready to go to nursing only 3 times a day, but that makes me paranoid about her not getting enough BM.  She only eats for like, 3-5 minutes at a time on one side per feeding, which is why dropping feedings makes me paranoid!

  • Natalie recently dropped her afterwork nursing session. ?I had been nursing 5 times a day -- 4 hr apart except one at about 4 p.m. (2 hr. before her last feeding). ?She started nursing for really short times at that "session" and she started biting while pulling off. ?I skipped it one day to see how she did and it worked out fine. ?So now she only nurses 4 times a day, roughly 4 hr. apart. (roughly 6:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.)

  • I should add that I was worried that she wouldn't get enough when she dropped that feeding and thus, start waking up. ?But she actually started nursing a min or two longer during other feedings and it didn't effect her sleep.

    I also give her 3 solid meals/day.?

  • DS gets BM 5 times per day.  Wake-up nursing, 11ish 7oz bottle at daycare, lunchtime nursing with me around 1:30 (this is the least because we play most of the time, so probably only 2-3oz), 6.5oz bottle at daycare around 4, and then bedtime (8).  I use EBM in his oatmeal at dinner, usually 3oz.  We follow a similar schedule on the weekends, just nursing instead of bottles.  There's usually an extra feeding because I don't have the same amount that his bottles has at those times.

DS also eats solid food breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

  • If you don't mind me asking, what time is the after work nursing session?  When I would try to nurse DS between 4 and 6ish, he would do the same thing that you are describing (pulling off, not seeming to get much, crying, etc.).  I called my LC and she told me that the evening is the time of day that a mother's milk supply is at it's lowest.  She said that if he didn't seem interested, to try giving him some water or juice, or a snack instead.  Now that DS is on whole milk, I have been giving him that around 5.  GL!  I hope I helped answer your question!
