Was your epidural useless?

Did anyone have an epidural but feel like it did nothing for your pain? After having my epi placed I was pain-free for about an hour, and then all hell broke loose. My doctors have repeatedly told me that an epi cannot take away the rectal pressure and the excruciating urgency to push, however this seems to be exactly what happened for both my sister and good friend (they had much more comfortable experiences)...and what I was expecting. I was in so much pain it was almost as if they turned the epi off and didn't tell me; I've looked into this and it indeed was pumping the entire time. Does anyone have any insight here?  TIA

    it could have slipped out of place,  my epi only worked on my right side but not on my left.

    Mine was FABULOUS!  After I never felt any of the pitocin contractions- NOTHING!  Pushing was fine too- no pain, just pressure, but not bad at all.  I was laughing as I pushed out our 9 lb 6 oz baby, and I'm petite- just 110 lbs pre pg.  Next time I'll walk in & get an epidural hands down!

    Stop telling me these horrible stories!  Lol.

    I had a friend that, like you, was pain-free at first, but then the epidural stopped working.  In her case, they told her that the "line got blocked" (whatever that means) but it took too long for the anesthesiologist to come and fix it, so she didn't have it corrected.  Maybe something like that happened to you?

    I have heard that it doesn't prevent the feeling of rectal pressure, but I did think it was supposed to prevent that feeling from being horrible...
    TTC #1 for one year with annovulation....

    I wouldn't say it was useless, but I got an epidural minutes before my emergency c-section (went through labour drug-free) but it didn't take properly and I felt them cutting. I screamed and they upped the levels and I was fine after that. It wasn't that bad though, I was mostly numb so it felt like a really really bad paper cut. Painful but not unbearable.

    Anyway, when the anesthesiologist was madly pumping more drugs into me, he did say that some people didn't take to the drugs as well as others, and that some people will always have some sensation, no matter how much of the drug they receive. In which case, they'd have to put me under.

    I jumped to 10 so fast that it was useless for contractions and the urge to push, but it was not useless in the sense that I could not feel the pain of delivery or any of the work they were doing after delivery.

    Stories like this freak me out! And I'm not even pregnant!

    2 babies, 2 non-working epis. My DH's uncles is the Chief of Anaesthesiology @ a local hospital and said after the first one they may have placed it wrong, but after having another with my second that didn't work that sometimes it doesn't work on certain people.

    Sucks! (But VERY uncommon)

    Worked for me for about an hour. Then I had so much pain in my hips I thought they were dislocating. I hadnt even started pushing yet. It just got worse from there. Even after Greysin was totally out and I had delivered the placenta, just the OB cleaning me off down there burned and hurt. I felt like I might as well have just not gotten it. Oh well I guess. Huh?

    Mine worked fine for me when I was 3-8 cm, and after that I was in a lot of pain. It took the doctor 4 different tries to get the epidural in, I wasn't thinking that it was going to be all that effective.?

    With my first child, the epidural was wonderful. I couldn't feel a thing. I pushed out a 10lb 5oz baby in 12 mins. The second one however was a different story. That one only worked on one leg and we all know that babies DON'T come out of the leg, so that epidural was totally useless! The doctor never did tell me why it didn't work so I'm hoping it was just a fluke. I plan on getting another epidural for baby #3 and it better work damm!t
