Babies: 0 - 3 Months

c-section mamas

i'm recovering from a section 6 days ago. feeling pretty good (just mild abdominal pain all over the front) except for this sharp, tugging, stabbing pain on the right side, right above my hip bone. it's excruciating, mainly when i sit or stand or change positions.

does this sound normal or should i call my doc?

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

  • It wouldn't hurt to call your OB and ask.  I don't remember having any stabbing or excruciating pain at that point (except if I sneezed or coughed!! THAT hurt!).

    I hope everything is okay.

  • I didn't have any pain like what you are describing - I would definitely call my doctor. BTW- very cute baby - I love her cheeks!

  • I didn't have any pain, but I've read that what you're experiencing is normal.  But I agree with PP - wouldn't hurt to call the doc & have him/her tell you it's normal.
  • I wouldn't say don't call your dr, but I had much more pain on the right side and when I asked about it they said that was the "surgical edge", whatever that means, and that it was understandable.  Pain in the abdominal region is normal after major surgery.  It will continue for awhile.  Congrats on your DD!
  • I had a similar type pain, but not until 3 weeks later. I was told it is normal, and that women tend to favor one side which is more likely to have pain- how you stand, which side you hold the baby on, etc. and they did mention the surgical side as well- something about which side they started the cut. But it never hurts to call if you are concerned.
  • I had that.  OMG it hurt like nothing else.  My dr said it was normal and just some minor nerve damage due to all the tugging they did.  Mine went away by the time dd way 10wks old.
  • Are you taking any pain meds?  If I stopped taking them, I definitely had a lot of pain.  I still get pains every once in a while...but not enough to take any meds for.  I took pain meds for about 2.5 weeks after my section.

  • That sounds like your nerve endings regrowing back. I had that on my left side for about 2 weeks. They started to cut me on my left, so it could be that they started on your right.

Is it like someone tugging on your incision? I had that, also on the right. I asked the nurse in the hospital, and she said the side the dr. cut on was usually more sore than the side the assisting nurse cut on, because drs were less gentle. When I thought about it, my dr. was indeed on the right!
