Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How long can a BF baby go without pooping?

DD has had rice cereal twice, Friday and Saturday eveinings. She really seemed to like it and we are just going to do cereal for a month and then start veggies at 6 months. She is constipated. She normally poops at least twice a day and hasn't pooped since first thing Monday morning and it was very thick (like peanut butter) and she normally has very runny poo. She pushes and nothing but gas comes out. Her belly isn't hard and she's not fussy about it, but she does arch her back a lot more than normal. Thanks ladies.

Re: How long can a BF baby go without pooping?

  • I have read they can go a week (or more) IF the stool is still loose when they DO go.  Your DD definitely sounds constipated.  Call your pedi and see what they recommend to get things moving.

  • my dr. told me after 1 month old, they are fine as long as the poop once a week.
  • usually my baby drinks pear juice daily 2oz for constipated. if she dosent poop within 5days is usually NORMAL  my pedi tells me that its okay, if she dosent poop everyday. but be concern by  the 5th day. far as the gas go take gas drops to help your baby out.what formula are you using or breast feeding?

  • I am BFing DD. The gas doesn't seem to bother her at all. She's just gassy. It doesn't seem to matter what I eat or how long we burp her, she's just a farty baby.

  • I could've written this post a month ago. Our Pedi said to switch from rice to oatmeal and we give her a little bit of prunes.  Works like a charm!
  • I would make sure that she gets a lot of foremilk. Nurse on both sides so that she gets plenty. It has a laxitive effect. Also try a different cereal than rice. Millet is really nutritious and much easier to difest, barly is good, and brown rice is good too. Try making your own...put grain in a blender to make a powder, cook 1 part grain to 3 parts water until pasty. If you want add dried prunes while cooking until the water is gone, then put back in the blender and add a little BM to make it smooth
