out of breastmilk and screaming?

My daughter nursed for almost an hour last night and nothing was left. She wouldn't latch on again, I tried over and over. She screamed and screamed moving her mouth aroudn looking for more.  I topped her off with 2 ozs of formula. should i just have let her scream or did I over feed her?  I'm not sure if i did the right thing. I know it was hunger. I burped her first and did try to relatch her but she refused and just begged for more w/her mouth.

Re: out of breastmilk and screaming?

  • Wow, she nursed for over an hour?!

My DD has done this as well when going thru a growth spurt and also when I had problems with my supply on one side.  Try to increase your milk supply.....let her nurse as often as she wants, pump after every feeding to completely empty your breasts, try power pumping where you pump for an hour, 10 minutes on/10 minutes off.

I would start all of this asap!  Good luck!!  Your supply will adjust!

  • If she kept looking for more then no you didn't overfeed her at all. If you did then she would have spit it back up. Your ok don't worry

  • I just noticed your DD's age....it is most likely the 6 week growth spurt!

  • thank u! I felt guilt giving her more food ...don't want to overfeed her, but havn't ever yet had issues w/supply. she's gaining. she was born 5lbs 12 ozs and she is now just about 9lbs!
  • Tar i just have to  give you a great big KUDOS! i know from your posts that you have been having a tough time with colic and all and I think you are doing a great job sticking to the BF alot of people would have given up by now!! it sounds like a growth spurt hang in there! I agree with pp by pumping to make sure you have gotten all the BM out.  plus then you will have that extra if you need it later on!
  • 6 week growth spurt!!! That and the 3 month one were the worst.

Colin did this.  he would then proceed to spew it all over me and then want more.  somehow my breasts kept producing!

Make sure she finishes one side before switching.  You may also want to pump a little after your day sessions to help increase your supply.  Also, increase your calorie intake and water intake during the day.

You need to feed her.  Just try to increase your supply and your breasts will catch up.

  • Oh and with the colic.  Have you tried Happiest Baby on the Block?  At that age Colin was in a swaddle a lot during the day.  As soon as he started getting fussy, I swaddled him.  Screaming fits stopped.  He was good most of the day, until the evening.  It got better after he hit 8 weeks (but then the reflux kicked in...).

Have you thought about a possible milk allergy?  Maybe eliminating milk from your diet would help?  Have you spoken to your ped about it?  Colic should not be all day.  Colic is just a specific time of day.  Maybe it is silent reflux?  I look back now and know that Colin had reflux from week 2.  It wasn't diagnosed until 3 months old.  I hate to think about how much he suffered. :(

  • You definitely did the right thing by topping her off with formula. ?She was hungry! ?I agree with pp that if she was overfed she would have barfed it back up. ?When DS was a week and a half old, he would nurse forever and still act hungry and would get angry at my breast. ?I would keep trying to latch him and he would but because nothing would come out he'd just get more and more hysterical and the cycle would continue. ?As soon as I gave him some formula, he was much happier because he had a full tummy. ?

  • I never drank milk and still don't. I totally cut dairy out. I used to have a yogurt, but not anymore. :) Thanks for your help!!! I'm trying to change my diet first to see if that helps. I did call the doctor, but they told me to mix brown sugar w/water and boil it to help with the colic and give her an ounce a day. DIdn't work and she was just eating sugar. I stopped that.

    Thanks everyone!
