Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Moms of older toddlers... when did they outgrow the stranger danger?

Seriously. When can my babies be held by someone other than me, my kids, DH, and the nanny? They still won't go anywhere near anyone in my family, even grandparents who they have seen 1-2 times a month since they were born!

Alice did let my co-worker hold her briefly today at work, which I expected to result in disaster, but he distracted her with leaves and moss on a rock lol. That was big progress! But, it is fleeting... every now and then she lets someone hold her but it's rare.

They will generally smile at people who talk to them in stores and stuff, but if my parents even come into our house, the babies scream and crawl away from them as fast as they can!

Re: Moms of older toddlers... when did they outgrow the stranger danger?

  • My DD is 16 1/2 mo and has been EXACTLY like this since 2 1/2 months old (not a typo-- she started this at less than 3 mo old). She started daycare in Jan and it has helped a lot -- it forced her to get used to lots of different people (before that we had a nanny). She has really improved a lot in the past month or so. This past weekend we went to visit my family and she was much better than before -- was happy to be in the room with them, and even walked up to my mom several times, hugged her leg, and said, "Hiiiiii". She still doesn't let people really hold her though other than us and her daycare teachers.
