Poll: when Cooking how do you handle DC

How do you handle DC when he/she is fussy and you are trying to cook something and DH/SO isn't around to help you out? I am attempting to bake ( I am a pastry chef) and DC is not having being in his swing. I just strapped him to me in his sling and am trying to bake this way. It is pretty hard. I was just curious to see what ya'll do.?

  • DH will put her in the Baby Bjorn and cook.  Or in her bouncy chair.  It's tough though.  Sometimes we have to just put it all on hold until she calms down.

  • In that case, I just have to wait for DH to get home to help so I can finish.
  • I put DS in his crib w/ his mobile on and bring the monitor to the kitchen with me.  If this doesnt work, I put him in his Bumbo on the kitchen floor w/ me far away from the stove, fridge, ect.  Fi both of these fails, I give him his paci and put him in the swing so he can (hopefully) go to sleep.

  • I don't know how your LO naps, but I start prepping for dinner during DS's 4:30 nap.  He only naps for about 45 minutes then but it is enough for me to get things ready to actually cook (slicing veggies, defrosting chicken, etc.).  DH is home at 5:30 so he takes DS and I go back to cooking.

Or else we wait until DS goes to sleep (7pm) and start then.

  • We have the space saver high chair that reclines, and I put DD in it and talk to her as I prepare.  She is in the kitchen right next to me.  If this doesn't work, I will do her swing.  When she starts solids she will eat while I cook.  Dinner will probably take forever to do this way, but it will help with our schedule, or so I hope!
  • that is exactly what I do!  I don't use the burners in the front row just the back row.  I also turn to the side and put things in oven etc.  I am just a bit creative.  I am sure someone will flame, but gotta get stuff done.  I make sure to keep her safe!
  • Lol - I just dealt with this today. In order to cook dinner tonight I started as soon as DS took a nap. I got the dish made far enough to where I could stick it in the fridge until it was ready to bake later on in the evening. DS sits in his bouncy chair in the kitchen with me and if he wakes up I hurry and complete as much as I can before he fusses. It gets pretty easy when you watch their cues (ie: naptime).
  • I put her in the wrap and just carry her around...it's either that or stop cooking.

  • DD hangs out in her bouncer and she just plays and watches me while I am baking or cooking dinner. She's pretty easy going when I am in the kitchen which is a huge bonus.
  • i put her in swing with a bottle.  she only fusses when hungry and if i tilt the bottle with a blanket under it to prop it up she can feed herself!
