perineal tear question

Hey Ladies,

I had a 3rd degree perineal tear with the birth of my son almost 2 weeks ago. The discharge info that I got said that I should be feeling a little better every day but I feel like I am still in a lot of pain. I am taking tylenol but it doesn't seem to be doing much for me. I'm also taking colace but I still cry everytime I have a bm. My question is if you had a 3rd degree tear or episiotomy how long did it take before you were feeling better?

Re: perineal tear question

  • For me it was closer to 3 weeks before I started feeling better, and at 4 weeks I still had some discomfort after walking for a while (I tried walking at the mall for about an hour just to get DS and myself out of the house).

Hang in there! I'm 5 weeks PP and don't really have any discomfort anymore and have regained pretty good control over my bladder (don't know if that problem was related to the tear or just regular childbirth thing).

Married June '03. DS born Jan '09. DD born Feb '12. No, we didn't choose to be childless for the first 6 years, only the first 3.

  • I also had a 3rd degree tear, so I completely sympathize! I took the Colace twice a day and ate tons of fiber which definitely made a huge difference for me at least. I also did the sitz baths at least once a day, but tried for twice a day. (I really think those helped, too.) It started to feel better around 3 weeks, but didn't really feel significantly improved until 6 weeks. I feel fine now other than the very rare twinge. (Haven't had sex yet though...) Good luck and hang in there - it will get better!

  • Shoot, I'm still sore sometimes!

  • I had both happen. I had a sitz bath twice a day, took stool softeners and drank a ton of water. I also moved really slowly and took it as easy as possible. I am feeling much better now. Maybe try the sitz and make sure to drink a lot of water. I hope you feel better soon.?

  • Make sure you're taking pericolace, not just colace. ?And for me, it took 2-3 months because I thought I was just being a whimp, but I guess the healing "just stopped" and they actually had to burn me to restart the healing process, so if doesn't get better soon I would make an appt.
