Hello everyone! So, it's been a crazy week and a half. Friday a week ago, I was getting ready for a trip to Ohio to visit with DH's family & my baby shower. At 4:30 PM, I noticed red blood when I went to the bathroom. I figured I was doing too much and decided to relax (we signed a new lease the night before and I was packing like crazy). At 7:30 PM, I had a LOT of red blood, but realized it was in my urine - NOT vaginal bleeding. I thought it was a bladder or kidney infection. I had no other symptoms, but called my doctor since blood in the urine is not a good thing. He said I should go to L&D and told me the tests they would likely run. After I spoke to him, I started to have severe back pain. Made me think kidney infection for sure (had one 10 years ago - it was the same pain). DH took me to L&D, I was immediately hooked up to a monitor - baby's heart rate was fine. They did a urine culture and blood work. The pain got worse by the minute. I was at about a level 10 and in tears. They did an ultrasound (regular and vaginal) and the baby, placenta, and cervix were all fine. To evaluate my pain, the resident doctor "punched" the lower right part of my back and I elbowed the crap out of him! It was just a reflex - it hurt so bad! They admitted me (about 12:30 AM) and ordered a kidney ultra sound. By the time I got to my room and laid down, it was 1:30 AM. They gave me morphine for the pain and an antibiotic because I was running a fever and they were worried about infection. Throughout the night, there was still blood in my urine. By 7 AM, the pain was gone (only a level 1 or 2 when touched) and my urine was back to normal. They kept me overnight again as a precaution. I had another ultrasound Saturday afternoon, and again the baby, placenta, and cervix were all fine. The urine culture and blood work showed no infection... Their conclusion... I had a kidney stone and passed it while in the hospital. Moral of the story... as hard as it might be (it is for me)... DRINK LOTS OF WATER! This is a pain you don't want to feel!
Re: PSA: Weekend Hospital Stay... Ladies - DRINK WATER!
Thanks for the PSA! I have heard that passing kidney stones is one of the worst pains you can experience. (I'm not sure how it rates compared to childbirth)
I'm sorry you missed your shower and the trip to Ohio, but at least the baby is okay!
My sister 7 kidney stone at 6.5 months pregnant and it brought on pre-term labor. They were able to stop the labor and her baby (now 15 years old) was fine. She said the kidney stones were much more painful than labor.
Yes, I was upset to miss my shower. My BFF planned it and I felt so bad. But, of course, she understood and just wanted me and the baby to be ok. I was glad that I was home when this happened... wouldn't want to go through this 400 miles away from my hospital!
