BFers: Cuts on nipples?

I've been trying to figure out why it's so painful to BF on my right side.  Well today I discovered my problem - I have two small cuts on my nipple.  What should I do?  BF through the pain?  Can I put neosporin on it between feedings (and wash it off before a feeding)?

Re: BFers: Cuts on nipples?

  • The Lanisoh lanolin worked best for mine. I noticed mine after pumping 4oz of pink (bloody) tinged milk...ewww. Mine were still sore but the bleeding was gone by the next day.

  • I wouldn't use neosporin, it's actually very allergenic.  You could use Aquaphor.  In small amounts it's safe, and you don't have to wash it off.

  • My LC told me to never user Neosporin because it can trap bacteria and cause breast infections.

When I had sores on my nipples, she told me to use Bacitracin ointment.  You can find it at Walgreens, CVS, etc.  Plus, you don't have to wash it off between feedings.

  • Thanks, ladies!  Man, is it painful!  I'll keep slathering on the lanolin.

  • I had the same thing, it looked as though the side was split.  Lanolin and keeping the nipple dry - pat dry after feeding, wear cotton, let them air out and keep breast feeding.  Mine healed pretty quickly once I was fastidious about caring for it.
