do you wash "surface clean only" stuffed animals in the washing machine?

i washed a couple of bears that were from my moms house in the washing machine in a pillow case because they were all dusty and they were fine, now with this illness, i'm trying to clean everything really well, and i just don't think "surface cleaning" will get the germs out of the stuffed animals that were used by the boys to rub their snot filled noses!?

i was just gonna throw em in the washing machine in pillow cases, anybody else do that??

  • Unless they have beans in them (like beanie babies) I just throw them in the wash no issue!  The beans will expand so you don't want immerse those.

  • I can say I'd probably do the same. ?However, I'd just be sure you're not super attached to any of them (just in case they don't survive). ?And I'd probably run them through the rinse twice to get all the soap out. ?

That's what I do with Maggie's dog toys now and what I'm sure I'll do with baby toys if the need is ever there!

  • I've thrown them in the wash before, even w/o the pillow case they all came out fine. I normally throw some towels in with them.
  • I hate the way stuffed animals feel after they are washed. I surface wash, and then put them in a ziplock in the freezer to sterilize.

I've never heard of freezing them.  Does that really work?  DS favorite toy is in desperate need of a wash.  I tried surface washing, but I'm not convinced that it is clean, so he doesn't get to play with it.  Freeze it?

  • I think freezing stops the bacteria growth but does not kills them. I believe you need to reach high temperatures to kill household bacteria.
