How did you find your nanny?

I had a verbal agreement with a woman who offers in home care, but was put on bed rest before I had the opportunity to meet with her. ?I got her handbook today and was SUPER unimpressed. ?After calling around to a few centers, 2 infants in center care is just too expensive. ?I feel like I'm starting all over again at 35 weeks pregnant and stuck on the couch. ?

I nannied right out of college, and I'm starting to think that that's going to be the best option for us. ?I just don't know the most efficient way to find one, and then screen for background. ?We're looking about 4-5 months out; that's plenty of time, right??

Re: How did you find your nanny?

  • We found our nanny through a nanny agency.  We found her only a few weeks before she started working for us. (20 years of nanny experience, we're her third family with twins, etc).

  • We found our first nanny through www.enannysource.com; we purchased a package where we posted an ad, I was able to search resumes and we also rec'd a b/g check.  We fired our first nanny 4 months later (probably should have done it her first week!) and instead hired our current wicked awesome nanny through a free ad I placed on craigslist.

I started phone screening candidates for our first nanny while I was on bedrest, but we didn't interview them in person until after our twins were born.

    Good luck with your search!

  • I found our nanny through my local MoMs group - she was actually the nanny for my 'big sister's' kids from the group.  She is wonderful and since she had already nannied for twins and I knew/trusted her main reference, I felt good hiring her.  I am here most of the time, and I also have a 2-year old.  We pay her $15/hour under the table.

  • Here are a couple of links I bookmarked when we were looking at our options.

Another option you may want to consider is using an Au Pair.  We found that to be the most cost effective option, although there are a few drawbacks to it.

  • I found my nanny on craigslist and she is awesome.  I interviewed a bunch of people and am so happy with her.  Some people I just went through emails and knew I didn't even want to meet them, and a few others I actually met.  Our nanny is a teacher that stopped teaching when she had her children.  She wanted to work since her youngest is going to kindergarden in the fall, but didn't want to go back to teaching.  She had a current background check is cpr certified, and is amazing.  She charges $10/hr for both babies and is always on the floor playing with them.  The tv is never on, she is hands on playing, singing and just has fun with the babies.  I never would have thought I would have found a nanny on craigslist, but I posted a llisting under the teaching section of jobs and most of the responses I got were from teachers that either were young and couldn't find a teaching job or who used to teach and wanted to do something else.  Good luck.  It is frusterating.
