r/p Help me decide how to take away paci

Okay, we've decided that we are ready to take away Avery's paci. I'm not looking for opinions about whether or not we should, just how we should do it. I've read two logical ways, and can't decide which would be better.1. cold turkey, just throw them all away so we're not tempted to give in2. cut the end off. a little at first, then more, until she gives it up (we hope)Has anyone had success with either of these methods (or something else we haven't thought of)? TIA?

  • Cold turkey!!  We had to take Clara's soother away at 15 months because she had to have a tooth extracted (poor kid fell down and hurt it badly enough that it had to come out!)  The dentist told us no soother for one week.  We just took that as our chance to finally stop being so chicken and DO IT (we'd been saying "this is the week we do it!!" for months)  She was just fine and she didn't seem to care at all.

We told her the soothers were "all gone" and she seemed to accept that.

  • Neither.  My DD's 13 months and we don't see the big deal for overnight sleep and naps.  Nothing outside the crib.

  • We did cold turkey around 10 months because we did not want to be taking away the pacifier and bottle at the same time!  I just made sure to do it at a time when we were home, over a weekend, because we both work!  I made sure that both grandmas knew that she could not have it anymore when she went back that week.  It happened to be a three day weekend so we did no pacifier for morning nap on Friday,  no pacifier for either morning or afternoon nap on Saturday, and then not at all on Sunday!  By

  • We took it away gradually and there was no adjustment period at all.  It was so smooth and she didn't even notice it missing.  First we took it away at playtime, so she would only have it for naps and bedtime.  We noticed that after we did that she would spit it out while sleeping and she didn't need it to stay asleep.  We then took it away for naps and bedtime.  I'm so glad we did it this way.

  • We actually did a mix of cold turkey and easing into it - daycare started a couple of weeks ago of not giving it to him at nap time and he didn't fuss, so we continued that in the car (since he only ever really wanted it in the car and for sleep; I would put on his music CD when he asked for the paci in the car). By the time that Friday night rolled around, we went cold turkey for bed. We had one set back (on the following Monday night) where he had to have it for bed, but I took it out of his mouth a few hours later. We haven't looked back.

    Good luck!
