"Crud" behind the ears???

I'm a little embarrased for Lilly... a few weeks ago I discovered she had some crud behind her ears.  I thought it was just dead skin, dried milk, etc.  I also realized I had "forgotten" to wash behind her ears all this time. Yeah, OK, oops!  I suck.

I've been much better about washing behind her ears now, however she now has major crud back there and the other day it was a little seepy.  The dried crud is yellow.  When I saw it that day and tried to get a closer look she cried in pain.  I put Neosporin on it, which seems to have helped a lot, but it's still there.

I think the Neosporin will heal it in time, but I'm curious as to what the problem is.  It's behind both ears, but one is worse than the other.  I even had to do a gentle cleaning of the inside of her ear (not the ear canal, but the part you see when you look at the ear).

I try to let skin issues heal on their own with her, but this one is kind of bothering me.  Any thoughts?

  • I don't know what it is, but I did the same thing with Aidan! I wasn't even thinking to wash behind his ears, but now I do, and he still gets it. Not as bad, but it's still there. I dab a little baby oil back there, and it works well.

  • It's probably cradle cap.  Try hydrocortisone cream.

  • I never even thought of that!  I assumed cradle cap was a head-only problem.

DH thought maybe we weren't drying behind her ears well enough and maybe that was triggering something.

I'll definitely try some hydrocortizone for now since we have some here.  Thanks for the help!

  • Avery gets that too

it might just be some sort of thrush or something from formula or bm (I can't remember what you're doing) getting trapped back there and then since it wasn't cleaned often, it sort of just grew?
