Baby Names

Why use names all starting with the same letter?

For whatever reason I just wondered why ppl do that.  I ask out of simple curiosity, no judgment.  Is it because it helps narrow down the selection?  or because they happen to just like those names?  or do they do it twice and then feel like later born children will be left out? or some other reason?  Any ideas?

Re: Why use names all starting with the same letter?

  • Maybe because they want the names to "flow"?

  • I think it's just to link siblings in a family.  My name is Toni and my older sister's name is Tana (rhymes with Donna).  It never bothered me that our names started with the same letters (we have similar middle initials, too - G and J).
  • My nephews have the same initials and it is a family tradition for my BIL's family.  All the men in the family have the same initials, so it is just understood that they will JT for first and middle names.  That could be the reason some people do it.
  • I have a friend who has 5 kids and they all have names that start with "A".

My sister has 2 boys and they have "J" names. I personally do not like that style. I would mess their names up all the time!  I honestly never ask my friend with 5 kids why she did it. I assumed she loved the letter A, lol.

My aunt and uncle have 4 children that start with the letter "H": Hannah, Hayden, Hope and Holly.?

I have a friend, Joan, that is married to Jeff and they have 4 children that start with the letter "J": Jordan, Jesseann, Juliet and Jenna

    I think it's weird!!

  • DS and DD both have E names.  We didn't plan it that way, we just loved both their names.  For future #3 we don't plan on using an E name although there are other E names I like for girls.  I just don't want to go that route of having all our kids' names starting with the same letter.  I just prefer to use names we love.

  • I grew up with 2 brothers with same first initial as I have and loved it...still do 31 years later.  I always thought it was cool.  I guess it connects us or something...don't really know how to explain it, but I've always liked it.  My parents didn't start out with the intention of naming us with the same letter, but it just kind of happened that the names they liked for the gender that was born was a J and there it was born.  We even would call our "restaurant" when we would surprise my parents in the summer by cooking for them, "Triple J Cafe".  :)
  • I'm not a fan of the "all named with the same first letter" thing, but many people are. It's a little too cutesy for my liking.
  • It just happens that all the names we really love all start with the same letter (B).  We are planning for all our kids to have names starting with B.  BUT if I didn't love the name I wouldn't use it.
  • My parents named both start with "J", so they named both my brother and I names that start with "J'.  My DH's name happens to start with "J", my parents are actually piissed that I'm not going to "keep with tradition and name my kids 'j' names."
  • You mean like how the Kardashian family all have 'K' names?
Nutmeg, cilantro, sage, mint, thyme... these are a few of my favorite things! Visit The Nest!Visit The Nest! We have four children; one left us too soon.
  • Sometimes, it's accidental. 3 of my 4 siblings have names starting with an A. My brother's name has a story behind it regarding how my parents met, my sister is named after my grandmother and in my case, my parents simply liked the name Anna. I didn't mean to continue the "A" theme with DD, DH and I just really loved the name and it has special meaning for us. But when she was born, my sister told me she was "glad her niece had an A like us."

Do you like any "J" names? Juliet is a top name for us. There are a lot of nice "J" names if you want to appease your parents. ?

  • Our DD is Keira, I'm Crystal, and our dog is Cate...and a lot of the girl names we like happen to start with a C/K, so there's a chance we'll end up with a very matchy family (except for DH).  It's not something we would have set out to do on purpose, though.  I think sometimes people end up with two names that start with the same letter and then realize they don't want the last kid to feel left out, so they carry it on.
  • we do it b/c we are dorks :) Both DH and I have G names (Gail and Greg) and we like the letter G - so we went with G names for our kids.  DS = Griffin and the twins will also have G names.

We know it's corny and we love it :)  It does help narrow down names a lot- but that is not why we did it - but an added bonus.

  • family tradition.. my grandparents named their kids with C  (craig, corrine, curtis) and my dad and aunt both carried that on (cheryl, christin, chad) and then my cousin continued too (caelen, ciana) and my son is colt.
weird but I love it and DH is on board.

  • Well my name is Kayla and when I 15 my mother found out she was pregnant with a girl.  I wanted her name to start with a K like mine, so we chose Kyra.  I believe that if I had no wanted that her name would have started with whatever my mom chose.
