purple nipples

Am I doing something wrong? I BF for most of the day and night, and pump about 3 times a day to get a freezer stash going. I noticed today that my nips look purple, almost like a hickey. The initial latch always hurts, but usually goes away during the feeding. Am I using the wrong size horns for the pump of something?

    The lactation consultant at the NICU noticed mine are like that today too and mine feel the same way you describe.  She said they are actually bruised and gave me the XL horns for the pump.  I had been using the large 27s, but now I'm using the 30s and they seem better.

    if it doesn't consistently hurt, than no you are fine.

    mine are ALWAYS purple after i pump. and yes i have the right size flange.

    Mine doesn't look purple after I pump... it's all the time.  When I stand in front of the mirror it's clear that certain parts of my nipple are bruised.
