Phew she fell asleep on her belly-tell me your experiences

After a sleepless night cause she kept flipping onto her belly and not wanting to flip back over (she can) and not wanting to sleep that way...she flipped over for her nap and just passed out that way. I am in a rocking chair next to her crib watching her breathing and movement cause she parked her face flat into the mattress, so I turned her head. I am elated that she can sleep this way (maybe she will tonight if she flips over), but so freaked out.

How does your baby tummy sleep-how do they position their head? Have they always positioned it that way? If they used to plant it face down into the mattress, did they correct that themselves?

Thanks gals!

  • DS has recently made himself a tummy sleeper. Usually he'll turn his head to the side, but last night when I checked on him he was kind of face-down. DH gently turned his head without waking him (whew!) and he kept snoozing.

  • DS has been a tummy sleeper since 6 months or so.  It really freaked me out at first, but he has slept so much better since he started sleeping this way.  Occasionally when I would peek in on him, he would face-plant, but I always just turned his head and he rarely does that anymore.

  • my guy has been a tummy sleeper from early on (with pedi approval).  i've never seen him face-plant it, he's always turned him head.
  • DD is a tummy sleeper all the way. She even puts her booty up in the air! She turns her head to the side when she sleeps.
  • DD has been a tummy sleeper since she was 4 wks old.  It's the only way she will sleep.  Apparently as soon as they can flip themselves over to their tummy's to sleep the risks of SIDS goes way down.
  • My DD has been a belly sleeper since she learned to roll that way at 3 months.  It bothered me at 1st but short of flipping her back over every 2 seconds I figured there was nothing I could do about it.  We have a video monitor and yes sometimes I see her face planted on the mattress but usually her head is turned to one side.  Acutally now what she does that bothers me more is the little time she is flat on her back she likes to lay her small blanket lovie completely over her face!

  • Oh man, I know exactly what your going through. It was horrible. When DS was 5 months he starting flipping to his stomach to sleep. Couldnt do a thing to keep him on his back. I would wake up 5x a night to go into his room and flip him to his stomach. But I learned that once they know how to roll front to back they know how to move themselves out of the "danger zone" when they start to get less oxygen, they will move themselves.

Since then, DS now sleeps both on his back, side, stomach, every corner in the crib... you name it. It can be scary at times because of all the SIDS warnings, Do's and Don'ts, but if she is rolling on her own, she should be ok.

ps- get a breathing monitor... that eased my nerves... a little.

Good luck with the new change!
