do "lines" in nails mean a lack of calcium?

I noticed yesterday that I have lines, or ridges...indentations, I can't really describe it- in a couple of my nails.  DH said it's from a lack of calcium in my diet. Not sure where he got that, but has anyone else heard that?

  • My med student husband says that's koilonychia - you're iron deficient. Ask your doc but take iron supplements! Calcium wouldn't hurt, either.

  • I've had rather big ridges and bumps in my nails for years. If they're not new, I wouldn't worry. or if you've had acrylic nails once apon a time, either.

koilonychia ... gonna go ask Dr. Google bout that one ;-)

edited to add: I"ve taken prenats for about 3 years now, with iron, and also take extra calcium b/c my mom has osteoporosis. Proof that you don't have to have definicency to have these bumps. ;-P

  • which direction do they go? from nail bed to tip or across the nail from side to side? The nail bed to tip kind are kind of common & I think can have many different reasons but the side to side/transverse kind are not, if that is the case, definitely talk to your dr.(not that you shouldn't mention the other kind to your dr too, they're just a lot more common)
