2nd Trimester

for those BFing and taking a short leave...

are you going to pump at work? what if there isnt anywhere to pump at work? you just going to stop BFing? I need advice!

I am only taking 3 months leave then going back to work part time and i want to BF as long as possible but I have nowhere to pump at work.. whats a mom to do?

Re: for those BFing and taking a short leave...

  • I won't really have a place to pump at work either - I plan on just hanging out in the bathroom.  It sucks, but I don't have many other options, and i want to keep breastfeeding.

  • I'm eager to read the answers to this because I will be going back to school in August after having baby in June and I won't be able to pump at school obviously! lol

by the way.. I love you siggy pic with the pic shirt! Thats such a cute outfit and your bump is adorable!

  • Check with your HR.  They really should provide you with a suitable place to pump at work.
  • I only plan on taking 6 weeks, hopefully less (I know, I know, it may not be possible).  I plan on pumping in my office with the door shut.

I hear a lot of women with no where other than the bathroom to pump will pump in their cars, a conference room, an empty office, etc.

  • Check with your state laws. Many states have laws that require your workplace to provide not only a private place to pump (typically cannot be a bathroom stall) and a fridge to store milk. A good place to start is your HR department.

    (BTW, I wouldn't call a 3-month leave short!)

  • Can you go in the bathroom? I know sitting in a stall isn't what I'd necessarily want to do, but I actually think I'll have to once I start school up again after baby is born.. A girl I work with currently pumps, and she just goes into the handicap stall and does it! GL!

thank you! I cant wait to see the answers either, i work at starbucks and there is only one womens restroom so not like i can sit in there and pump while customers are waiting to use it haha

  • Great photos by the way.  Can you talk to a boss/supervisor?  Maybe they will accomodate for you for awhile.

  • I am pumping at work.  I work at a hospital and the people I work with are pretty good in covering you so you can pump.  We also have the option of going down to the NICU step down and using their rooms over there to pump.  They have a special rooms for the moms that we can also use.

sorry, i know its not short compared to some .. but for me its short because i want to be home with my son longer! :(

  • I'm either going to be doing it in the bathroom or in my cubicle, lol.  I don't care.

I think they have to, actually, even if it's just an empty office you can lock yourself into for 10-15 minutes.

  • I agree with PP.. I think its required that you have a space to pump.. I'm not sure what law or legal document states that.. but I asked my manager.. and she gladly offered her office for me to use last time.. I pumped about 3x a day for about 15-20 minutes.. it wasn't bad.. although hard to keep up for a whole year!
  • i dont work in an office tho. i work at a starbucks as a manager partime. the only private room is a bathroom with only one toilet. im screwed.

I would be surprised if they didn't have some sort of accomodation.  You do get breaks, you may be able to on your breaks.

Every girl who's taken maternity leave at my work has been gone at least 6 months (4 girls in the last 2 years). Combining Maternity Leave with FMLA, vacations and other time off, it works out to be quite a bit for some.

  • Ask your district manager or call your HR if you can't ask the DM.
  • Now with Starbucks I know that means limited space... you may just have to get your boss's permission to "close" the restroom while you pump (perhaps if there's a consistent "slow" period during the day, I know there were usually several at ours), unless he or she has an office in your store that you could use.

Not to but in here, but don't they have a back office where you do the deposit or something?  I would imagine if they did, you could go in there.

  • The California Labor Code requires that they provide you a place other than a bathroom stall to express milk.  Talk to you boss--they have to do it.

the back office is connected with the main floor only separated by a wall. no door. fully open to all employees. =/ And we only get 10 mins for break and no longer.

  • Is there an office room you can use at Starbucks?  Or heck, even a utility closet (only the mops and brooms would be watching).  I'm one of two girls at work who will be pumping this year, and we have a smallish office that is being used for storage right now, but they are cleaning it out and setting it up with a laptop and printer for us to work and pump at the same time.
    I HAVE CHILDREN.
  • FYI, it is your right to ask for and theirs to provide a place for you to pump.
  • I plan on BFing but we have a nursing room.  If I didn't I guess I would just use the restroom anyway?? Hope it works out!

  • Honestly this is what I would do, but I was pretty hardcore and if my pumping made people feel uncomfortable that was their problem...

Set up a corner in the backroom, maybe put up a screen like partition and pump there.  Get a hooter hider type cover and just pump.  Yes people may be able to hear you or peek their head in, but everybody you work with will know what's up and will leave you alone.

    or
Get and car lighter adapter and pump in the car, again with a cover.

I was in a busy office with a screen partition.  People just knew to leave me alone.  They could talk to me if they wanted, it didn't make me feel uncomfortable, just them when they figured it out.

  • Why not use your car?  I keep reading about BF in the car.  They sell lots of covers that should work for pumping, too, and if you can park in a relatively secluded area then you should be all set.  Unless you take public transportation to work, then I guess it wouldn't.

Otherwise, can you try and build up your stash before you return to work?  I really have no idea what I'm talking about here or how hard that would be because I've never done it, but it might be something to look in to.  Maybe it would allow you to only have to pump once a day instead of three times.

  • you should speak with your HR b/c legally, your company must provide you with a private room with a lock to pump other than the bathroom.  Make sure you know your rights too b/c you should not be penalized for bfing and wanting it to be a comfortable experience.  GL
  • Legally they have to provide you a place, but if you are like me, you don't want to push.  So, I recommend pumping it your car.  Drive to a corner of the lot and use a hootie hider (great investment).  Your other option would be to formula feed while you are at work and nurse the rest of the time.  Any amount of BM is better for your baby than none.  :)
